Trepaneringsritualen’s long out of print debut release: Deathward, To The Womb finally sees a proper reissue on CD, and limited edition 12″ vinyl.

An invocation not so much of BABALON Herself, but of the tormented elemental of Frater T.O.P.A.N., and his fervent attempts to usher in the Æon of Horus.

In the lyrics – based on the texts of Frater T.O.P.A.N. on the Babalon Working – the perilous flame that is BABLON is called upon to ravage creation. She is asked to scorch the earth clean for the coming cosmic renovation. The Eternal Virgin would spring from Her womb. From Her love, the new divine man would be born. 70 years after the Bablon Working was deemed successfully concluded, its utter failure is painfully apparent.

»All love songs are of me« She says. This is certainly true of the first five songs of Deathward, To The Womb. The final songs, All Hail The Black Flame, seem different altogether. In this guise, BABALON brings not solely love, but cataclysm; a holocaust brought upon the domain of Man. Manifested as the Black Flame, She reaches from a time before time, formless chaos, and rips apart the very fabric of the created worlds. Such is Her nature: two opposing principles; that of the nurturing mother, and that of the callous destroyer.

“She is flame of life, power of darkness – She destroys with a glance – She may take thy soul. She feeds upon the death of men.”

Appended to the six original songs is a specially commissioned 12 minutes and 57 seconds long ritual work entitled “I Remember When I Was God” (included as download for the vinyl edition), and attributed to Teeraal Räum Pheynix. BABALON was summoned at Winter Solstice 2015 under the sign of ᚢ, with assistance from Alone In The Hollow Garden, A.I.L of Arktau Eos, Michael Idehall, KzR of Bölzer, Nÿland ii of Hadewych, and Æther. To destroy and to give life. We declare this ritual concluded and successful.

Two years in the making, Tara Busch and Maf Lewis collaborated with John Foxx & The Maths/Wrangler's Benge Edwards to create an authentic period (mid-80s available equipment only) extended score/concept album around their successfully toured (US and Europe) live score/film of the same name (directed by Maf).

I may be slightly biased, but this is a truly stunning and original album and I couldn't have been more excited to have been asked to play fictional 80s newscaster Brock Horton for the project. 

This audio clip is from the actual movie soundtrack, appearing in a slightly different form on the album (also featuring the voice of Tara Busch as Jane Swell).

‘Glutes’ is peak-time material without being overly fast or chaotic, the energy instead coming from the transportive arrangement and emotive melodic content. The same can be said for Bäumel’s ‘Surge’ on Kompakt, an anthem in the sets of Tale Of Us last year which led to this release.

The title track rises and falls, surging with wide-sweeping synth notes and a steady rhythm to anchor the waves. An infectious refrain pulls you further in and, right on cue, the kick drum continues to beat the sweet spot. ‘Engage’ is filled with similarly subtle details, uplifting arpeggios and atmospheric reverb. Half-way through the melody bursts into life, shining brightly through the haze and creating one of those moments of release that make the Afterlife sound work so well on a dancefloor.

Scripta Soli ("The writings of the earth") is a thematic contemplation triggered by a great Czech artist in the form of a fictive experience during an apocalyptic war catastrophe, perceived by a person imprisoned in the bunker. Epically dramatized, it consists of 12 figurative parts to strip moral vacuum accumulated by memories, fears, visions and expectations of the inevitable, like echoes from the devastated core, sonically interpreted by the ground and aborted on the surface. Vladimir Hirsch offers expressionist sharpness and contrast to gouge out the focal sound from the background cacophonous substance to evoke stark and haunting imagery behind. Proving his expertise and repertoire he renders field recordings, electroacoustic and digital techniques through his typical metamorphic musicalization of primarily non-musical elements realizing the shrill, dynamic realities of the inner conflict: the titular sonic earth eventually turns into a grave. Limited to 300 copies in a full-colour matte-laminated Digipak.

“Governance” continues KHOST‘s immersion in themes of detachment and dissonance, and ruminates upon the exertion of wills that are not your own, and upon the ways to detect and trace the outlines of the presence(s) that may exert these daily wills upon you, day by day. It was written over the course of the 2016/17 Winter, during times of unease and sickness for the band, including one near-death experience. The resulting album is a hinterland of low resolution transmissions interspersed with broad concrete columns of distortion that loom suddenly from the dim landscape. Governance is like driving at night with your spirituality asleep at the wheel.

With demoralizing vocal terror, hypnotic nightmarescapes, frost-encrusted tones, and horrifying rhythms, KHOST’s Governance devastates the listener with nearly fifty minutes of entrancing yet hazardous tectonic doom-laced revulsion. Features guest appearances from Eugene Robinson (OXBOW), and Jo Quail, and includes a remix of the track ‘Coven’ by Tel Aviv artist Adrian Stainburner.
