Reclaim Your City 061 | Dax J (London)

Forward thinking, London born artist Dax J, is at the helm of cutting edge music, constantly striving to push the boundaries of audio manipulation into new areas unexplored.

Label owner of “Monnom Black”, one of the 3 founding members of “EarToGround Records” and releases on seminal labels such as Deeply Rooted House, Foundation Sonore, Sleaze, Affin and Falkplatz. Dax has seen his music remixed by some of the scenes biggest artists from the likes of Ryan Elliott & Jonas Kopp to Mark Broom and Phase.

Dedicated to pushing underground music, Dax teamed up with label partner Chris Stanford to create the first release on EarToGround Records, the Programm EP in 2011. It saw notable remixes from the likes of Shifted and Truss. Released on vinyl only it was an instant success and completely sold out. Since then Dax has continued to release original material for the label alongside partners Chris and Gareth Wild.

In 2013 Dax went on to start his own imprint “Monnom Black” a vinyl only project that has seen music from artists across the globe establishing Dax’s ideal of techno. On launch it gained huge support from the scene and has become a successful go to label for quality techno.

As a DJ, Dax J is known for his raw and powerful sets, he’s played at every club & warehouse worth mentioning in his hometown London whilst also been seen playing across Europe & South America at various clubs and events from the likes of Space in Ibiza, Exit festival in Serbia to Cocoliche in Buenos Aries. His techno sound reflects his early roots of pirate radio and underground raves.

Dax grew up listening to the UK sounds of jungle, drum n bass and garage. Being heavily influenced by the likes of Goldie and Bad Company, his love for the underground meant he soon started dj’ing on pirate radios at an early age of 15 whilst he was still at school. He became an avid vinyl collector buying from his local record store “Black Market” on a weekly basis whilst at the same time producing and crafting his sound. His first vinyl releases would come in 2005 on old Jungle labels like Mickey Finn’s “Urban Takeover” under alias “Dangerous” and his own imprint back then “Xplicit Sound.” Following on from this Dax went on to discover the sounds of techno during one summer spent in Ibiza. From this point on his passion for cutting edge 4 by 4 beats took over but the old jungle influences are still heard today in his dj sets and productions.

His past and current music have earned Dax plays from some of the most respected names in underground dance music as well as receiving BBC Radio 1 airplay. Degree educated in Music Technology and running his own studio in East London Dax J also works as an in demand sound and mastering engineer. With a stack of music set to be released and a busy gig schedule over the rest of the year the future is looking bright for the UK artist.

Dilemma Podcast 094 DJ T.A.G from Havelberg (Gemany) Born in 1980, in the small town of Havelberg in Sachsen-Anhalt / Germany.
Defined by influences from the 80s New Wave sound and the dark synth-pop (Depeche Mode), he found his way quickly to electronic music. In 1997 T.A.G. began collecting the corresponding equipment for the task and with enthusiasm began spinning records. From 1997-1999 his sound took on the Detroit/Techno/Minimal style and thereafter the influence of Tresor Records’ artists such as Cristian Vogel and Neil Landstrumm helped him develop his current Brighton techno sound. After several years and successful gigs, in 2003 he played in Tresor New Faces night which gave him the incentive to try out for the Tresor Award. Ultimately he was selected among the top three by demonstrating his mixing and sound technique. In 2005 T.A.G. was made an official member of the Headquarters team and in 2007 a resident DJ in Club Tresor.Berlin and plays for people all over the World.

But in 2005 T.A.G. also had production plans. Before long he also had decided to build his own small studio in order to be able to transfer his individual sound to a live format for presentation. In the last few years he has been able to share this live experience with audiences at various events and clubs. Trying to find a laptop in his live-gig set-up would be hard because he sets up completely with hardware so that each performance there is something to see and watch. That makes an exciting live gig with breaking techno beats sewn together with abstract synth sounds, and embellished with live vocals.
In 2016 he starts his first Project with Thomas Wandrach, together they are ´TAG & WANDRACH´ but he also plays Live Shows alone with Analog Equipment.

Alexander Kowalski

Born in Greifswald, Germany, the first decisive direction for Alexander Kowalski was the move to Berlin with his family in the 1980s. He spent his formative years as teenager in the city where the fall of the wall and resulting chaotic and creative sense of freedom initiated a worldwide reputation that is today legendary.

Alexander was drawn to the buoyant Berlin techno scene that would spawn so many outstanding producers and DJs of his generation. Soon he was regularly buying the newest techno and house records from Detroit and Chicago at the Berlin record store Hard Wax, which opened in 1989 and become a focal point in the scene. 

Motivated by a coincidence, 
Alexander began a musical self-discovery although he was raised without learning to play a musical instrument or reading musical notes. He found a tracker software for the Amiga 500 on a floppy disk that also contained an editable demo file with primitive remixes of Depeche Mode songs. After a few playful attempts with the tracker, Alexander realized that he had found the potential to express himself creatively and refine his own musical language. Together with a friend he began to construct a home studio where he soon produced his first demos.

Alexander a été attiré par la scène techno berlinoise dynamique qui allait engendrer tant de producteurs et de DJ exceptionnels de sa génération. Bientôt, il acheta régulièrement les derniers disques techno et house de Detroit et de Chicago au magasin de disques berlinois Hard Wax, qui ouvrit en 1989 et devint un point central de la scène. 

Motivé par une coïncidence, 
Alexander a commencé une auto-découverte musicale bien qu'il ait été élevé sans apprendre à jouer d'un instrument de musique ou à lire des notes de musique.
Il a trouvé un logiciel de suivi pour l'Amiga 500 sur une disquette qui contenait également un fichier de démonstration modifiable avec des remix primitifs de chansons de Depeche Mode.

Après quelques tentatives ludiques avec le tracker, Alexander s'est rendu compte qu'il avait trouvé le potentiel de s'exprimer de manière créative et d'affiner son propre langage musical. Avec un ami, il commence à construire un home studio où il produit bientôt ses premières démos.

With a career spanning nearly three decades, Alexander Kowalski’s story is a living testament to the legacy of Berlin techno. His journey began in the late 90s amidst the city’s cultural revolution, ignited by the emergence of techno music. Debuting in 1997 under the moniker DisX3 at the legendary club Tresor in Berlin, he quickly established himself as a driving force in shaping the sounds of the era with fast-paced beats and robust bass lines. 

His impactful live sets also led to releases on the esteemed label of Tresor.Under the guidance of Heiko Laux’s Kanzleramt label, Kowalski pioneered the melodic and sophisticated sound for which he is renowned—a sound that has become synonymous with German techno. His albums 'Echoes', 'Progress', and 'Response', along with tracks like 'Speaker Attack,' 'Belo Horizonte,' and 'All I Got To Know,' have made significant contributions to the history of techno.

Kowalski's music productions and live performances have earned widespread acclaim from both dancefloor enthusiasts and discerning music critics alike. His remixes are highly sought after by icons such as Dave Gahan, Joris Voorn, Paul Kalkbrenner and Funk D´Void. This he balances with a heavy touring schedule, appearing at major festivals including Awakenings, Time Warp, Mayday, Nature One, I Love Techno, Monegros, Aquasella, and many more.

In 2009, he launched his own label, Damage Music, as a platform for his own music and releases from artists he really admires. He has also released music on esteemed platforms such as Be As One, ARTS, Illegal Alien, Tronic, and Arkham Audio. His 'Cycles' LP on Mord stands as a testament to his ability to create timeless music, showcasing the enduring relevance and agility of his productions.

As techno continues to evolve, so too does Kowalski's artistry. He remains at the forefront of modern techno innovation with his principal releases under the name Alexander Kowalski. Additionally, he keeps the analog spirit of 90s techno alive through his DisX3 live and DJ performances, transporting new generations of dancers back to the genre's golden age.

Jon Hester got his start in the midwest US, living in Chicago, Minneapolis, and connecting with Detroit. After years on the dance floor he took to the decks, going on to work in a record shop, host his own events, and hold residencies that developed his sound. Music production and a move to Berlin followed, but dancing and mixing are still the inspirations that drive him to create. His DJ sets are built on physical rhythms and adventurous programming, effortlessly combining diverse varieties of techno and house. With an engaging presence and a knack for telling a story, he builds a unique connection with each audience, and works any room until it sweats.

Arnaud’s career dates back to 1990 when he began managing record shops and building what is now a huge archive of knowledge, taste and musical dedication to his name. His residency at Paris’s Queen and memorable sets around the world perfected Arnaud’s DJ skills, earning him his spot in the worldwide scene where he continues to this day to be a prominent figure. Since 2006 Arnaud lives in London where he is a regular DJ at Fabric since 10 years.
Arnaud runs Children of Tomorrow since 2011, a label created by Emmanuel Ternois in 2008.
A timeless rawness is the main element of the label. Arnaud is releasing his own music and confirmed talents such as Terrence Dixon, Oscar Mulero, ROD, Jonas Kopp, Ryan Elliott, Samuli Kemppi, Zadig, Antigone, Tensal, Exium, Savas Pascalidis, Antonio De Angelis or Birth Of Frequency. Almost all the releases have been played or charted by artists such as Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann, DVS1, Ben Sims, Rodhad, DJ Deep, Chris Liebing or Dave Clarke.
Together with his partners and colleagues Arnaud organises a series of Children Of Tomorrow events in London & abroad that focus on talent.
Since 1999 Arnaud produced different EP’s & remixes for Affin, Bass Culture, Cocoon, Children of Tomorrow, Chronicle, Syncrophone, Safari Electronique, jus to name few. Since 2013 Arnaud is also producing with Antonio De Angelis under Detect Audio’s alias.
Arnaud is one of the true veterans of the London underground music scene. Having been associated or played at every major techno party over the last ten years, Arnaud has kept himself at the very forefront of the scene.
