Test of Stillson Hammer's new features in firmware version 2.0 (CV preset change, gate/burst trigger probability, step repeat). Four drum modules of various makes are patched into a mixer, with the four channels of Stillson Hammer triggering them with CV of various parameters. A Pressure Points is used to change the sequence preset, most are similar with small changes in CV assignments. All performance variations you hear are done by manually playing the CV A/B knobs and changing presets. The sliders or module knobs were not touched at all during this recording. CVA generally adds gate events or changes the probability of certain triggers, and CVB disrupts the timing of the sequence mostly through the new Step Repeat parameter.

Joe Miller is a music composer, sound designer, and audio engineer. Since 2008, he has crafted original music and sound for more than 20 films, national TV series, marketing campaigns, games, theater, etc.  A decade of writing on commission, in popular genres and with standard tools, created a need for new forms of personal artistic expression. In reaction to this, making music in the "modular method" has become a primary form of self-expression and music experimentation in Joe's life.  These improvised experiments are released under the name Xin.

In Chinese philosophy, xin can refer to one's disposition or feelings or to one's confidence or trust in something or someone. Xin has a connotation of intention yet can be used to refer to long-term goals. Xin (心) itself is a concept that is as much cognitive as emotional.  This blend of cognitive intention and emotional reaction is the essence of this approach to modular music making.

The Long Walk

Eurorack modular Krell composition inspired by Todd Barton's Buchla Krell patch. MakeNoise DPO as the complex oscillator, Xaoc Zadar and Intellijel Quadra + expander for envelopes, Malekko Dual Borg for LPG duties and a Doepfer A-103 for the low pass filter. The random elements were generated by the Mutable Instruments Marbles module and reverb and delay were added at the end by an Erica Synths Pico DSP and a TipTop z5000.

This is episode three of an audio documentary in three parts that follows key figures through the Revolutionary War battle of Kings Mountain, South Carolina, bringing the extant writings and words of the past to life. 

On July 4, 1776, the assortment of states that was formerly known as the Thirteen Colonies declared its independence from Great Britain. Four years later, on October 7, 1780, Patriot irregulars would engage British Major Patrick Ferguson in a decisive victory in an hour-long battle at Kings Mountain, South Carolina. 

This show was conceived by John Mugabe, South Carolina resident, and a graduate of the inaugural class of the American Battlefield Trust’s Youth Leadership Team, as a part of his capstone project about the Battle of Kings Mountain. 

The brave men and heroes of that battle were John’s motivating factor in choosing these stories as his capstone project. “They were willing to put their lives at risk, as Gen. William Campbell put it, ‘to remember their liberty,’” John said. He continued, “And while that is what they fought for, we must not lose sight of the fact that they won much more than that, they won their children’s liberty, your liberty, my liberty, and the liberty of every country accepting of our democratic ideals.”

The American Battlefield Trust Youth Leadership Team is comprised of a rotating group of 10-15 young people, aged 15-18, chosen every year to serve as the youth face and voice of the American Battlefield Trust.  As a part of the program, members of the Youth Leadership Team complete capstone projects in their communities.
