Guru Pournami is a sacred day for us here at the Yoga Center, and this year we were fortunate to have Sadhguru with us for a sathsang. To celebrate the occasion we performed the Shivashtakam chant by Adi Shankara put to our own music.

“Uyir Nokkam” is an inspired creation by Sounds of Isha based on Tamil lyrics originally written by Sadhguru. The title of the song means the “purpose of life is life itself”. Replying to the much asked question, “What is the purpose of life?”, Sadhguru has often answered that life is too big for any purpose – this is the essence of “Uyir Nokkam.”

Here is the English translation of the refrain:

The blossoming of flowers is life’s intent
The growing trees are life’s intent
Desires which surface in you are life’s intent
What dwells deep within your heart is also life’s intent

The feminine has always been worshipped in Indian culture in various forms. This wonderful poem by the great Tamil poet, Mahakavi Bharathiyar is in praise of the goddess and his experience of her. This has been set to tune as an offering to the Devi, Linga Bhairavi by the Sounds of Isha.

Linga Bhairavi is the most exuberant expression of the Divine Feminine, residing in a triangular-shaped abode at the Velliangiri Foothills. Unique in her manifestation in the form of a linga, Devi was consecrated by Sadhguru as a powerful energy form with a solidified mercury core. Representing the creative and nurturing aspects of the universe, she is the ultimate manifestation of the Mother Goddess – powerful and all-encompassing.

Thunbam illadha nilaiye shakthi

“Those who aspire for knowledge, knowing, and transcending the limitations of the mortal body, will aspire for that aspect of the feminine which is referred to as sattva – Saraswati is the representative of that – or the Moon.”

In this song of Adi Sankara, rendered by Sounds of Isha, Adi Sankara praises the Devi as the one who sits on the lotus and is the Goddess of words and language. This is also the time when, traditionally, there is a ritualistic worship of all implements of learning and working as these are the tools with which one understands and works with life.

It is not even your body, mind, thought or emotion. Life means what’s throbbing within you. It is only because “this” is ON that everything else seems to be meaningful. If “this” stops, nothing around you will mean a damn thing to you or anyone.

And life is a purpose unto itself, it need not have another purpose. It is a big enough phenomenon. Its magnitude is too large for it to be focused on something else. It is a purpose and an end unto itself.”

“Vairagya” literally means “transparent.” Just as clear flowing water in the river acquires the color of the soil beneath, one who is transparent has no color of his own. Color is a product of the breaking up of light, the basis of our ability to see. Vairagya is an unbroken or “free-of-all-distortion” state that can light the world. It is only in a state of vairagya one can see as It Is. 

Essentially, vairagya means to be as the Creator intended – not bound to any particular aspect of life, the only bond with the Beyond, the source of Creation. Vairagya is the second album in Sounds of Isha’s “Mantra Series,” and consists of chants sung by Isha Brahmacharis.
