The Cyborgs production team continues its soul mining mission with Future R&B Vocals, a neo-soul construction kit that provides a nice parallel to Lofi Cuts (2021, Cyborgs / Soundtrack Loops). Future R&B Vocals is split between drums (120-130 BPM), bass, female vocals, synth, and effects folders. The drums and bass are delivered crisp and relatively dry, which makes them flexible—but the other stuff is a different story! The female vocals resonate in a cavernous space that’s very cleverly crafted to avoid dominating the mix. The synth parts share this space; simple riffs leverage signal processing and reverb in enveloping ambiences that are naturally easy to work with. The effects folder has transient hits, noise and percussion effects, and sustained tones—proper accents for the diffuse abstract soul context being explored here by Cyborgs. Bass and drum one shots, and bass and synth MIDI files round out and complete the collection which, all in all, delivers a strong concept of modern space in radical artform R&B. Libraries such as Future Vocal R&B make it easy to resist the urge to stack too many loops in search of a quality composition. It goes without saying that the best vintage sci-fi sound effects are made with the best vintage hardware tech and its contemporary boutique inspirations. Here on Alien Worlds: Retro Sci-Fi Effects we have just that, with Soundtrack Loops’ own Jason Donnelly as the controller. This package of non-looping sound effects comprises 71 files with classic black ‘n’ white sci-fi authenticity: wobbly analog oscillators, rudimentary arpeggios, chattering circuits, and all the classic LFO modulations from pitch to noise. The paleo-ambient vibe is cold and distant, solitary and baffling, bringing to mind Eno’s simple but elusively deep Music for Films-era ruminations, as well as the best of the archetypal dronesmiths, academic electronic music soundscapers, and proto-industrial pioneers of early underground electronic music—bear in mind, these are sound effects created by a musician! Motors, Machines, and Metal Noises delivers 120 loops and 169 one shots in an interesting split between veteran music/Foley hybrid producer Edgar Lopez, and Brian Kupferschmid, a sound effects producer and inventor of a mysterious musical box with “weird metal things and a mic” inside. It’s a perfect match! Edgar is up to his usual tricks—sampling everything in sight, bundling the sounds into folders full of one shots, and then making beats with these one shots that sound as if all his inanimate objects have minds of their own, with their own cranky stories to tell. In this set, the loops (delivered at 80, 100, 130, and 150 BPM) tend toward mellow glitch music, smooth and fluid, but still infused with that Mexican street vibe glow—pretty mellow for Edgar, and a great opportunity for introspective electronica producers to get some of that Lopez magic on their timelines. On the flip side, Brian’s noise box gets bowed, scraped, plucked and struck to produce sounds ranging from percussive hits to complex drones loaded with metallic overtones. Other included samples by Brian include ratchets, wrenches, drills, clicking things, and other stuff you might find in a dusty old toolshed. His contribution fits right in—these two producers are birds of a feather, and Soundtrack Loops is pleased to pair them up for this solid entry in the hybrid sample library column.
