Not a perfect mix by any means, lots of different styles trying to please my own ears and those of a young crowd !! Finally got to catch the ambiance sound with my news DR-40X recorder, adds a lot to the ambiance, feels really different than a podcast in my opinion.

Hormone self-released their eponymous debut in 2017, chiseling out tracks from the bedrock of boogie funk and bedroom disco with forays into the hazier quadrants of dance pop. “Smoothsayer,” their new EP on Dream Chimney, sees the duo leaning into a more focused version of this sound, with smacky drums, luxe synth pads and rubbery bass lines rolling out alongside contrasting tracks with a sense of quiet weightlessness, all tied together with the cool, drizzly beauty of Clement’s vocal layers. 

Rounding out the compact 4 trackers are remixes that give the tracks the full Dream Chimney treatment, with a breakified dreamgaze flip of Smoothsayer by labelmate Sorcerer and our premiere feature, a balearic chug dub of Wallfacer by the Chimney's own.

Paula Juana is joined by legendary Nigerian musician Steve Monite to tell us more about how his one and only album ‘Only You’ (1984) was made. 
Steve Monite always knew he would be a pop star. It’s just that it’s taken him four decades to be discovered. Six years ago, Soundway Records released 2016’s Doing It In Lagos: Boogie, Pop & Disco in 1980s Nigeria, a collection of forgotten songs from the country’s golden age of funk. One of those tracks, Monite’s ‘Only You’, became a sleeper success. A restless whirl of fat electro-funk bass, spacey synth bursts and dramatic drum claps, it sounded like it’d been beamed in from the future in a dusty record sleeve. Frank Ocean covered it during a live performance, followed by Theophilus London and Tame Impala, who released their version online. Then Soundway’s remix hit dancefloors across the world, turning its singer into an overnight sensation: a faded obscurity, back from the dead, now rendered in glorious Technicolour. Soundway Records’ reissue of his album ‘Only You’ is now out on digital platforms and coming beautifully remastered on vinyl in October.

More 80's Italo gems - :D - This mixtape is the resuslt of some extensive digging through the records in my studio while in an 80's Italo mood. My record collection is in no order and takes me days of constant digging to get through. This usually results in finding records that i forgot i ever had! RE-DISCOVERY i think its called. Anyway while i had the pile infront of me i thought i better get them recorded. This is what happened for the next hour after. Be warned. I do not organise and practice perfect mixes using a computer. I simply get the records i want recording and hit record on the CD burner. For me it captures a moment in time. There may be the odd push and drag of a record as i battle my way through the mix trying to keep everything as smooth as possible but a lot of the time im mixing live bands which is diffcult. One take drama in effect!
