German House royalty M.A.N.D.Y. joins Maga for new single ‘Time Is On My Side’ with a huge remix from our Queen Bee, Anja Schneider, and the vocals from Inga Humpe. 

M.A.N.D.Y. needs little introduction. Founder of Get Physical, producer, DJ and events organiser Patrick Bodmer is what every ‘90s DJ wanted to be when they grew up! From his albums for UK Clubbing behemoth Fabric to his festival show-stopping ‘Body Language’ and beyond, M.A.N.D.Y. is a legend and pioneer of the German scene. French producer MAGA is known for his melodic, organic and minimalistic sounds. Releasing on a range of labels including Scenarios and Flying Circus, his near decade at the top of his game has been an interesting ride. 

Berlin native and front woman for 2raumwohnung, Inga Humpe has been active in the industry for over four decades. Considered “an amazing talent with the best voice” by Anja Schneider no less, Inga’s sizable and sonically diverse catalogue covers everything from Punk (with Neonbabies), to ‘Codo’ (produced by her sister Anette as ‘80s pop act, DÖF) to solo chart success ‘Riding into the Blue (Cowboy Song)’ produced by Grammy award winner Trevor Horn (The Buggles/Art of Noise) and, more recently, a co-writing credit for ‘Automatic Love’ for Kylie Minogue in 2000. As potent a force in the industry as ever, she is currently gearing up for an already sold out European tour with 2raumwohnung celebrating their 21st anniversary. 

Opening in ambience, delayed percussions and warm pads invite you in. Taking its time to develop, melodics and vocal ad libs sweep in and out before the main vocals kick things up a notch. Deep, soulful and utterly beguiling. On remix duties, Anja toughens the groove for the early morning sweatathon. Adding even more melodic elements to the main motifs breathes new life into an already genre-defining work of art. Miss this at your peril!

Making his debut on Anja’s Sous imprint this June is Dutch artist and key nightlife figure Lupe. Straight off the back of gigs with Maceo Plex and Alinka in 2021, he will be found gracing the stage at Down The Rabbit Hole Festival in the Netherlands later this summer.

Since 2004, he has organised and promoted his own monthly club events in Amsterdam where he’s played alongside Honey Dijon, Cormac, Shinedoe, DJ T and Andy Butler. Residencies came in the form of the globally renowned Red Light Radio and more recently Parish, the queer nightclub in The Hague. Not to forget some special releases on labels including Twirl, Pets Recordings and Love Child Records.

A graduate of film and TV studies, he loves to scan through old productions to find samples or inspiration for his own vocals and this can be found in this stellar 4 track EP ‘Come Through’.

The title track has a sci-fi space like synth work, accompanied by hypnotic vocals giving it an element of sass. The hypnotic work continues into ‘Catwalk Trax’, minimal in its construction, it’s carried by its uplifting claps and snares. ‘Lucky Bass’ sounds instantly broodier and more dancefloor focused, with a pumping bass and eerie vox, whilst ‘Into Heaven’ is chunky and warm with its upbeat rhythm.

“The dance floor has always been a place of self-development, safety and fun for me. I dedicate my life to that timeless energy” adds Lupe.

Anja Schneider further demonstrates her creative versatility and musical evolution with ‘Aura’ - a collaboration with singer/songwriter Sophie Hunger. 

The relationship between the pair goes back to Anja remixing the track ‘There Is Still Pain Left’ from Hunger’s 2018 album ‘Molecules’. A track which slipped under the radar through 2019 but enjoyed a resurgence in the second half of 2020 with a number of radio plays from stations desperate for music which fitted the more thoughtful, slower pace of lockdown life. This unforeseen consequence relit a creative spark. Conversations happened between the two Berlin-based talents and the idea for ‘Aura’ was born.  

Despite living in the same city, the collaboration was recorded remotely between the Blackhead Studios where Schneider is based, and Hunger’s apartment kitchen-come-studio. Despite this physical separation ‘Aura’ oozes emotional resonance. Hunger’s lyrics shimmering with an intense yet fragile quality over Schneider’s deeply felt melancholic soundscape. A joint expression unashamedly coloured and shaped by the shared experience of living through a typically brutal Berlin winter during continuous pandemic lockdown. We take things back to the clubs, with a debut on Sous Music for UK-based producer Because Of Art whose recent success comes from releases on Sasha’s LUZoSCURA LP, a single on Skream’s Of Unsound Mind, “Lost In The Sun” for the prolific Stress Records and most notably ‘Elevate' released on tastemaker Danny Howard's Nothing Else Matters label which went on to spend over 6 weeks on top of the Beatport Leftfield House & Techno chart. 

‘Ethereal’ is a stand-out slab of feel good melodic house. Just what we all need as we emerge from lockdown to make the most of the last of summer and look forward to more normal times ahead. As Anja says herself, “as soon as I heard Ethereal I knew this was going to be a big record for the end of the summer. The vibe is so fun and positive. Sous Music come again with another summer smash from Anja Schneider’s secret stash of techno bombs. This time it is Reform who serve up their second release on the Berlin label, following up the memorable Nightcall EP from summer 2020.   

Since last summer, Reform have continued to established themselves as one of the 'ones to watch' amongst the new breed of techno producers. Originally signed to fellow Italian Luca Agnelli's Etruria Beat Records in 2015 the pair have gone on to have a series of successful releases for some of the most popular labels in techno, including two EP’s for Pan Pot's Second State, attracting remixes from Amelie Lens, Nikola Gala and Marco Effe along the way.

'Opening up 2022 on Sous is an exciting new artist from Berlin, Basic Instinct, with his ‘Into The Night’ debut EP.  Part of the Vertere Berlin crew, DJ and producer Uli Hasselmann aka Basic Instinct is something of an enigma. Hugely popular from his exciting explorations of the deeper side of techno and dark disco vibes, very little is known about him aside from his fashion brand with the club and street in mind. Collaborating with Jennifer Cardini, Andhim and most recently Hugo Boss, he is now working closely with Anja on a Schneider merchandise collection.

 Title track ‘Into The Night’ is an elegant and thoughtful meander into the mind of a deeply engaging artist, bass and beats cleverly mound into a hypnotic gelatinous haze. Warm analogue sweeps and tribal drum work keep feet firmly on the floor while vocal ad libs drift in and out and percussive layers intensify the trip. 

‘Energy’ does what it says on the tin. A rich stab-led groove leads the way as a spoken word sample declares “Energy has brought us here!” Finally, ‘Morning Groove’ lightens the mood considerably without losing any of his trademark hypnotics. Loopy and transcendental, this is the perfect showcase for an artist on the ascent, ready to take the jump to the world stage. '

Another example of Anja Schneider’s varied and cosmopolitan writing, the Berlin-based doyenne continues the run of vocal-led productions characterised by their emotive feeling and sense of meaning. Immediately recognisable from its distinctive organ lead, 'I Care For You' seduces with a deep, tribal rhythm and soulful vocal. Opening with sombre, raspy chords and the pitter patter of faraway percussives, ‘I Care For You’ is an ode to Schneider’s connection with the dancefloor and club life. After losing the biggest part of her professional life during the pandemic, she admits she found it hard to know how to stay positive and manage your own mental health.

Written during the lockdown, when dance floors were closed, it's not a club or dancefloor focused track. “This track is all about the vigilance and respect for one another. Take care of those you love and try not to lose those special connections through the hardest times. A reminder to all my friends that I am always there for them” says Anja. Deep kicks and warm lows surround as keys draw out the melody matched by spoken vocals talking of love and togetherness. ‘I Care For You’ nods subtly at the hopefulness of the early ‘90s House scene with razor sharp modern studio techniques and that unique sonic beauty Anja escribes to all her own productions.

Following on from her critically acclaimed album ‘SoMe’ comes a trio of remixes that represent the different shades of Anja Schneider’s new Sous Music imprint. 

Butch is a long-time friend and respected colleague of Anja’s and championed ‘All I See’ from early on, begging her for a copy after seeing her play it at Street Parade. His re-work felt fated, but that didn’t mean it was easy. “I know it was a difficult one for him to do. We didn’t expect the track to be such a huge hit, so I was very interested to see what he’d do. He’s done an amazing job!” she buzzes. Butch delivers an inspired off-kilter minimal house interpretation, that’s heavy on mood without losing the spirit of her original.

Since bursting onto the scene back in 2009, Markus has stayed faithful to his minimal tech roots, creating mind-altering releases for everyone from Rekids to Figure by way of his own SCKT imprint. An artist at heart, his music is very often made without a dance floor in mind: testament to his studio craft that he’s become such a potent force in the scene.   Lead track, ‘6AM’ is an homage to the early morning groovers, who, blurry-eyed, still inhabit the floor when everyone else has left the club. The true heads who appreciate the ebb and flow of a night and grasp onto the embers with joyous abandon. Reflective and somber, muted chords work against ricochet sonics as Suckut’s hypnotic power takes you over for one last hurrah before the lights come on.

Anja returns to Sous this September to mark the 11th release on the label – it comes with with two incredible original cuts - ‘Funk That’ and ‘Far Side of The Moon’. As ever, her creative maelstrom has yielded huge results once again.    ‘Funk That’ is a tough groover. Fattened 909 kicks and crisp percussion lay the foundations for keyed rave stabs, vocal shots and tons of energy. Swinging hats add a layer of movement as a cool pad is introduced midway along with acidic nuance and claps.

Anja Schneider’s Sous imprint has fast become a permanent home for Anja’s more experimental productions as well as providing her with the chance to bring some of her favourite artists to the label. In the last two years, we have enjoyed releases from Billy Turner, Madben, Mella Dee, Fort Romeau and most recently Markus Suckut. All of which have collectively bought a diverse palette of music to Sous.

Asio (aka R-Play) is a Parisian based producer who’s career quickly became noted in 2007 after he broke into the French techno scene with his tracks signed to Harthouse, Synewave and Suara. Anja brings this new name to Sous this October with 3 original cuts on his EP ‘Dada’.  Opening things is the title track ‘Dada’. Instantly we’re drawn into a groovy deep bass track with sparse percussion. As the various layers reveal themselves, a sinister energy grows. The track then explodes into life at the drop. ‘Last Day in Space’ is a subtle tribal groove. Swinging off beat hats keep time as the layers of melody and percussion fade into earshot. A track of light and dark where patience is rewarded by a huge payoff. 

Finally, ‘Sol Sol’ employs interesting FX to the drums creating a wonky feel from the off. Once the synths kick in the wonk gets much wonkier!

Asio (aka R - Play) - Dada

Inspired by the calling to get back to the good old times, both tracks nod nostalgically to care-free vibes of days past. The pumping tribal groove of 'Seduction' energetically underpinning hazy, mesmerising pads and playful piano tones that roll in and out as tension builds to a peak. While 'Mitte' ups the ante with its swirling synths, driving bassline and rave stabs evoking a smiley e-vibe as the energy of '90s trance is crafted to contemporary dance floors.

Over the course of the last couple of years I have begun to hear more breakbeats naturally appear in the new music I like. For example I have been playing a lot of tracks by the likes of Special Request, Ejeca, Warung, DJ Haus. They make breakbeats from right across a range of sounds from the really old school rave style through to new interpretations of jungle or more mid-tempo vibes which were more melodic and trance like. I mentioned previously how lockdown has given me the chance to explore my own record collection, especially a lot of the progressive sounds that were big in the 90s. Falling back in love with those sounds reminded me of the fluidity and variety you find in breakbeats and this gave me lots of production ideas. Somehow it feels more free and I am able to be more adventurous than the typical 4/4 techno and house template. That’s what gave me the confidence to  explore these new breakbeat styles and reach out to Soultrain who is such a legend in the reggae and drum & bass scenes. It was a lot of fun working with a vocalist for a change and in this case in particular Soultrain’s vocal work made our studio sessions come alive and made the track we did come together so well.

BAUGRUPPE90 are two extremely talented young producers who came to me like a lightning from the sky. They are part of the new techno generation. Talking about Techno these days you have to listen to a new generation - no fear to mix different styles in one track in a techno garment.

After 20 years in the scene, I have to be honest I never heard this before and never met someone with so much creative potential and positive energy. Its a blast from the past into the future.

It was not often that I was blown away so easily … Its something you have to take a listen and step away to make space for the future generation. It's all about construction and industrial aesthetics

A new name to watch out for, is Matrefakt. With releases on Skream’s Of Unsound Mind imprint, they make a debut on Sous with a remix that takes you on a groovy magical journey. Its vibey, daytime dance at its best, stripping out the original motifs and teasing the vocal for maximum effect.

This latest two-tracker has a more familiar deep house blueprint. “I found that the experimentation I played with on my previous two releases has given me the confidence to introduce more creative flare or create musical moments within this style” says Anja.

‘Turning My Head’ is built on a low-slung tribal rhythm. There is a deep, growling bass that provides a contrast with the classic spoken vocal and dancing flute tones. “I wanted to create a slow burning progression in the track that evokes the humid thumping heartbeat of late-night energy charged dark rooms which I have missed so much these past 9 months” adds Anja.

‘Strange Case’ is a jacked-up deep house track with differently instrumented phases that use sounds that stand out like the enchanted plucked strings or the harmonic steel drum reverberations.
