Issued on BBE Music, “Reflections” is the new album by London-based harp player and composer Alina Bzhezhinska, alongside her HipHarpCollective.

Following up her critically acclaimed debut album “Inspiration” (Ubuntu 2018), Bzhezhinskaputs together a second long-player, collaborating with British jazz stars Tony Kofi(Saxophones), Jay Phelps (Trumpet), Julie Walkington (Double Bass) and vocalist VimalaRowe, strongly supported by international talents Mikele Montolli (Electric Bass), Joel Prime(Percussion), Adam Teixeira (Drums) and Ying Xue (Violin & Viola).

Alina creates a unique sound on the harp with layered effects and electronics, combining original works and covers to pay homage to some of jazz, funk and hip-hop’s greatest innovators. Throughout the record, she draws from a variety of influences, including the likes of Dorothy Ashby’s ‘Afro-Harping’, Alice Coltrane’s spiritual outputs, Joe Henderson’s free-form jazz experimentation, 90s Acid Jazz and Trip-Hop.

“This album is very vibrant and reflects directly on London’s multicultural community. We had so much fun making this recording – it truly built up our morale in the middle of the pandemic and I hope our fans will feel this energy too.

For ‘Reflections’ I tried to break from any stereotypes and limitations – what you hear is my own choice of sounds and influences, taken from the many mixtapes I’ve been making since I was a teenager. I put together the music I like to listen to when I am happy or sad when I feel like dancing or meditating. The tunes we play are my own reflections on what I love the most – a free spirit, courage, innovation and all the beautiful things life gives us.

In this program, we hear the regional pop and neotraditional music that animates festivals, funerals and community celebrations across the county. We travel to the lush Volta region in the east to hear Ewe borborbor, agbadza and brass band music. In the northern city of Tamale, we hear Dagbani traditional music, hip-hop and pop, and visit the vibrant Damba chieftaincy festival in nearby Yendi. Back in the bustling metropolis, Accra, we get down to the latest pop hits and underground styles moving hips in the capital city.

From Paris to New Orleans and Boston, Haitian musicians are shaking up the music scene. The island’s powerful Africa-rooted culture—from celebratory rara and sensuous kompa to the deep well of vodun songs—has become a global force. In this program, we spend time with racine music veteran Lolo Beaubrun of Boukman Eksperyans, and his rising star son, Paul Beaubrun, both on a swing through New England. We also meet Paris-based Moonlight Benjamin, and hear recent New Orleans-tinged music from Lakou Mizik and RAM. Finally, we meet Tjovi Ginen, a pan-African band featuring the provocative and humorous spoken words of Boston-based Haitian educator and animator Daniel Laurent. To mark the 70th anniversary of the publication, on 30 April 2017 A.L. Kennedy and Philippe Sands led a live reading of Primo Levi’s powerful account of survival at Auschwitz, If This Is A Man at Southbank Centre.

A remarkable insight into one of history's darkest chapters, Levi's book offers an unflinching portrait of life, death and survival in a concentration camp.

The performance was directed by Nina Brazier and the cast included Niklas Frank, son of Hans Frank, the Nazi Governor General of occupied Poland and lawyer of Adolf Hitler; actor Henry Goodman; Patrick Lawrence QC, grandson of Sir Geoffrey Lawrence who was the presiding judge at Nuremberg; actor Emma Pallant; broadcaster Robert Peston; survivor of the Omarska death camp Kemal Pervanic; survivor of Auschwitz, Susan Pollack; Professor of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham Sir Martyn Poliakoff; former editor of The Guardian, Alan Rusbridger; playwright Tom Stoppard; Rwandan Genocide survivor Liliane Umubyeyi; actor Samuel West; and featuring music by Bloch, Haas, Klein, Krasa, Mendelssohn, Mahler, Schubert, Laks, Puccini, Shostakovich, Liszt, Bartok, Ullman and Ben-Haim, under the direction of Tomo Keller, leader of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.
