On 15 October 2023 we will mark the 70th anniversary of the first mainland British nuclear test in Australia, at Emu Field in South Australia, on the country of the Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara peoples.

This week, parliamentarians have the opportunity to hear from Yankunytjatjara, Antikarinya, and Pitjantjatjara woman and nuclear test survivor, June Lennon, who was four months old, in October 1953, when the Totem 1 nuclear bomb was detonated at Emu Field.

We should never forget that Ms Lennon’s family and First Nations people were treated abysmally in this matter – given no proper warning or protection, let alone consultation and prior informed consent in relation to the profoundly harmful and toxic use of their country. There is no disputing the fact that the British and Australian governments were utterly carless in their consideration of Aboriginal people.

Through these secret nuclear weapons test, which were not sanctioned by an Australian cabinet or parliamentary process, Aboriginal people experienced dispossession and displacement, and their sacred lands were irrevocably poisoned.  The truth about the tests and their impact was covered up, and the severe injustice went unrecognised and unaddressed for decades. Indeed, it is not well understood or acknowledged in Australia today.

Francine Bono-Neri, PhD, RN, APRN, PNP

Dr. Bono-Neri is a pediatric nurse practitioner, educator, researcher, published author, and international speaker. She has served on the boards of ANA-NY, a NAPNAP chapter, and was awarded an N.E.F. Scholarship. In turn, she established an annual scholarship for master’s or doctoral nursing students whose work focuses on human trafficking or anti-trafficking measures. Dr. Bono-Neri has been recognized at the UN, receiving the Inspiring Global Nurse Award, International Ceca Award, and has been newly inducted in the 2024 Class of the American Academy of Nursing Fellows. She’s the Co-founder and President of Nurses United Against Human Trafficking, a global association dedicated to combatting human trafficking by educating, equipping, and empowering healthcare professionals on anti-trafficking measures.

Sometimes that fight comes out in punches, kicks, and words that cut deep. I’m exhausted. I’m hurt. But I care too much to stop showing up. 2-15-2020 - Valentine's Day hangover, Rage concert hype, Shine a Light on slavery day, Hookers for Jesus

This song is a cry for justice, a voice for the silenced, and a tribute to the survivors of child exploitation. Inspired by the true story of Jeffrey Epstein's* heinous crimes, I wrote this song to raise awareness about the devastating reality of child abuse and exploitation.

As I poured my heart and emotions into this song, I hoped to capture the pain, the fear, and the resilience of those who have been affected by these crimes. I want this song to be a beacon of hope, a reminder that we must stand together against injustice and fight for the protection and dignity of all children.

To those who have been brave enough to share their stories, I see you. I hear you. And I believe you. This song is for you, and for all those who are still searching for justice and healing.

Breast cancer survivors are living longer than ever, thanks to research and medical advances, but new studies suggest that some treatments may come with a hidden cost: accelerated aging. A recent study, titled “Accelerated aging associated with cancer characteristics and treatments among breast cancer survivors,” published in Aging (Aging-US), reveals that breast cancer and its treatments may speed up biological aging, with effects lasting up to a decade post-diagnosis.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women worldwide. Medical advancements have dramatically improved survival rates, making it one of the most treatable forms of cancer. Yet, many survivors report lasting symptoms like fatigue, memory issues, and reduced vitality that resemble accelerated aging. This pattern has led scientists to investigate whether treatments for breast cancer might be contributing to biological age acceleration.

NENA is an Australian Co-operative which aims to bring together people around the continent who are creating and thinking about a new economy which serves people and planet, and amplify the fantastic work already being done. BTL has recorded 3 of their national conferences, which can be found here.
Co-operatives, Commons and Communities Canberra (CoCanberra) is building the new economy in Canberra, Australia, through the creation of “Climate Co-ops”.
This means you will continue to hear the eclectic mix of interviews and field recordings from Behind the Lines, mixed up with snapshots of what NENA’s various hubs and people are up to, various conferences, and recordings from the regular meetups of CoCanberra.

Cancer and aging are two sides of age-related tumorigenesis.

The mission of the journal is to understand the mechanisms surrounding aging and age-related diseases, including cancer as the main cause of death in the modern aged population.

The journal aims to promote 1) treatment of age-related diseases by slowing down aging, 2) validation of anti-aging drugs by treating age-related diseases, and 3) prevention of cancer by inhibiting aging. (Cancer and COVID-19 are age-related diseases.)

Songwriting has been a lifelong passion for me, dating back to elementary school when I first began crafting stories, poems, and eventually lyrics. As a former drummer in various bands, I always relied on others to bring my words to life musically. However, after a long hiatus from drumming, I decided to take the leap and learn to compose music to accompany my lyrics. Through classes and dedication, I've embarked on a new journey, breathing fresh life into old lyrics and penning new ones. You'll find a mix of older and newer works here, for the lyrics. 

Music has been a part of me for as long as I can remember. One of my earliest memories is being completely entranced by 'The Little Drummer Boy' as a very young child. There was something about the rhythm and the melody that just captivated me. I must have played it a thousand times, wearing the record out, and from that moment on, I was hooked. I knew I wanted to be a drummer, and to create that magic for others. 

But I was too young then, and of course I couldn't afford a drum set just yet. So, I turned to writing as a way to express myself. As I mentioned above, I started with stories, then poems, and eventually, lyrics. I found that writing was not only a way to tap into my creativity, but also a way to process my emotions and experiences. 

As I grew older, my love for music only deepened. I realized that music has this incredible power to transport us to different times and places, to evoke emotions and memories that we thought were long forgotten. It's a universal language that can bring people together like nothing else can. 

For me, writing lyrics is a cathartic experience. It's a way for me to tap into my emotions, to process the world around me, and to create something that I hope will resonate with others. And when I hear my words come to life in a song, it's truly magical. It's a feeling that never gets old, and it's what keeps me coming back to music time and time again. 

I love many genres of music and artists of many genres. And if you listen to some of my songs, you will find that I like to make songs of different genres as well as mix different genres into each song. One of my all-time favorite bands is Evanescence, and I have made a lot of songs where I have tried my best to emulate that sound. 

Now, I have recently started experimenting with new sounds. I never heard of glitch beats before I took music classes, and now I'm fascinated with the sound, so I have been experimenting with glitch beats recently. 

I hope you enjoy some of my songs. And thanks so much to everyone who has been listening so far. I truly appreciate it. I welcome constructive feedback to help me grow as an artist, and I appreciate your support. ❤️
