In episode one of our 2022 Sexual Assault Awareness Month mini season, Just Science sat down with Mary Weston, the Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, Supervisor of the Cold Case Unit, and Project Manager of the Sexual Assault Kit Task Force at the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office to discuss sexual assault response with vulnerable populations. Different challenges may arise when prosecuting sexual assault cases involving vulnerable populations, including cases with male victims. Listen along as Mary Weston discusses strategies for effective prosecution of cases with male victims, provides rationales for why members of vulnerable populations may be targeted for sexual assault, and presents considerations for the safety, healing, and well-being of survivors. This episode is funded by the National Institute of Justice’s Forensic Technology Center of Excellence.

In 2019, LADFF screened the beautiful short film Disfluency. Three years later, we're proud to be screening the feature film version of Disfluency. 

In this episode of Film Forward, we speak with writer/director Anna Baumgarten. She discusses the journey from short to feature, shooting a movie in her hometown, and the catharsis of telling a personal story.

In 2021, a coalition of national museum and library associations awarded the Peale (Baltimore, Maryland) a Communities for Immunity grant. The goal of the project is for trusted, local institutions to engage their communities in order to boost COVID-19 vaccine confidence. Since being awarded the grant, we've been gathering stories from people about their experiences with COVID and getting the vaccine. This story was recorded in partnership with our friends at the Stoop Storytelling Series, here in Baltimore.

Nefer (00:06): All right. Hello, people.

Audience (00:12): Hello.

Nefer  (00:13): Just a fair warning, trigger warning, COVID, March 2020. Geez, I can't wrap my head around that was two years ago, but COVID was hard. Before COVID, I was dealing with depression and I just regretted living. And everywhere I went, it was just that burning feeling that "I'm not supposed to be here." I had been sexually assaulted multiple times, and my parents divorced. It was so much stuff that was just collecting. I didn't confront it. I didn't handle it or anything before COVID. So all of that just Inside of me. COVID came around, no friends. I was always in my room. I was what I call a loner. I was alone with my thoughts and the built-up pressure and aggression. And all of these emotions just built up inside of me and now it's like, because I'm alone in my room, it's like all of those emotions, all of those negative feelings just came out. I was hurting a lot. Well, it raised the question, why am I here?

Nefer (02:44): And because of that question, I wanted to not be here. It was to the point where I was suffering every single day, and school wasn't any help because my school decided to give us so much work. And I had so much on my plate. It just added more and more and more and more. Again, no friends, no people to talk to, but another thing is, I did not want to tell anybody because I didn't want to burden them. So it was mostly my fault for being all in a bubble, but I was left with all of these feelings and emotions. Well, I used to self-harm and I would beat up a brick wall until my knuckles bled, because it was just like I was hurting and I didn't know how to handle it. So this one time, I was taking a bath. I thought that the bath would help me, would help cleanse or release all of that negative energy and those negative emotions, but what it really did was... It just gave me the opportunity to, I guess, let go.

Nefer: A Story of Survival, Baltimore

I first heard Paul Brady sing a song about New Orleans in 1976. He said it was based on an old Irish song tune, but he had merged the words from somewhere else and now it was 'The Lakes of Pontchartrain'. (Bob Dylan loved it and did a version on one of his albums, but he could never master Mr Brady's guitar open tuning.)
I've written some new words, but also used the old words in a different order, to give a different meaning. It's called The Folk Process. (In case anyone wants to sue me, I've changed the tune to the second half of the song. Now that's what I call tinkering!)
Anyway, it's a serious subject and it deserves a great song. I couldn't do that all on my own, so I've called on the giants of the past, so I can stand on their shoulders. I hope they don't mind.

Cinthia Gallegos is a staff member at the California Victims Compensation Board (CalVCB). CalVCB is a financial assistance program for victims who are residents in California or who were victims of a crime that took place in California. Ms. Gallegos goes over CalVCB's application process, qualifying criteria to receive financial assistance, and eligible expenses such as relocation, income loss, medical, and mental health. She further talks about the requirement to report the crime and the exceptions. Finally, Ms. Gallegos discusses the accessibility of services to non-English speakers and immigrants.

On this episode we have Deborah Fezelle, who is the author of, “What’s Past is Prologue.” Deborah is a frequent guest of the podcast and a familiar author to many readers. She has an incredible resume in the arts and is a graduate of Juilliard. Deborah has worked as an actress, a director and coach, and as a writer. This book is the latest installment of the Nick McDeare Series. 

This book, because of its subject-matter, was written to be more of a stand-alone piece than the other McDeare installments. Deborah describes this book as a personal “triumph” because she had to work through her own history of trauma to carry the reader on a similar journey with the characters. 

It is a very sincere and heartfelt discussion, however, as the trigger warning indicates; it contains mature subject matter.

Today, the Peale Center is partnering with Museum on Main Street to continue the storytelling campaign, often connected thematically to MoMS' traveling exhibitions about topics like work history, waterways, food culture, traditional music, hometown sports, etc. Anyone with an interest in life in America’s towns and communities can add their own experiences to the archive.
