The Dutch­‐English folk pop band Southern Sunrise is back with their second release of 2013, after the successful release of their debut EP Brighton.

The above-­mentioned debut record led to national and regional airplay, a live performance on Dutch Radio 1 during the popular program ‘Met Het Oog Op Morgen’ and a string of shows throughout the UK and the Netherlands. Southern Sunrise played live in the main hall of Paradiso Amsterdam and at the Bruis festival in Maastricht with a.o. Miles Kane, Kitty Daisy & Lewis and Mister & Mississippi. The band also played established Dutch venues like Mezz Breda, Tivoli Oudegracht and the Nieuwe Nor in Heerlen as special guests for golden record winner Ozark Henry and winner of the 2012 edition of ‘De Beste Singer-­Songwriter Van Nederland’, Douwe Bob.

Now Southern Sunrise are ready for their second release of the year, their new single ‘Elspeth’. The song is recorded in the spiritual home of the blues­‐rockers from DeWolff, the analogue Electrosaurus Southern Sound Studio in Utrecht, and is produced by DeWolff frontman Pablo van de Poel. The single has a nice, warm tape­‐sound to it, which you can’t find anymore in a lot of modern pop songs. To finish this sound, the song has been mastered by Adam Nunn (a.o. Mumford & Sons and Nick Drake) in the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London.

Dutch-English folk pop band Southern Sunrise present their second mini-album titled Feels Like Home, after the successful release of their 2013 debut EP Brighton. 

Inspired by events in their day-to-day life as well as fictional story telling, much like their previous EP Brighton, Southern Sunrise release four tracks in the shape of their new EP titled Feels Like Home. The songs featured on Feels Like Home display a familiar yet fresh sound, combining MacLeod’s serene and soothing vocals with new instruments like the synthesizer on ‘Red Sun Calling’ and the pedal steel on ‘Closer’ and ‘Feels Like Home’, played by guest musician Stefan Wolfs (Catawba River Fox/The Cosmic Carnival).

The subjects of the songs range from (fictional) stories about travelling (‘Red Sun Calling’) and romance (‘Closer’) to real life events like MacLeod’s relationship with her sister ‘Elspeth’ and her initial homesickness, caused by the band’s relocation to The Netherlands on ‘Feels Like Home’, which she was pulled through with the help of her mother’s phone calls. 

The EP, produced by Pablo van de Poel, was recorded in the spiritual home of DeWolff, the analogue Electrosaurus Southern Sound Studio located on the Oudegracht in the city centre of Utrecht. This inspiring and comfortable area, along with the studio has been frequently visited by the band in the past year, and inspired the EP’s title Feels Like Home. The EP was mastered by Roy Brezinski at the Brezinski Basement Studio and includes, besides Stefan Wolfs, guest appearances from Luka van de Poel (drums) and Pablo van de Poel (acoustic guitar).

Just a year after the band wrote their first song, Southern Sunrise proudly present their debut EP, titled Brighton. Written in and about the British seaside town by York native Shonagh Macleod and Dutch songwriter Arjan Pieters, Brighton is a result of the collaboration between the two different cultures.

Shonagh, born and raised in the quiet, historical city of York, had a very diverse introduction to music. Influenced by her New Yorker mother and Glaswegian father’s vast CD collection, she listened to everything from Bananarama, to The Mamas & The Papas, to Kula Shaker (not to forget the Friday night viewing of TOTPs). In her teens she began going to gigs at some of York’s many venues and grew to love live music.

Arjan, on the other hand, started with a classical background, playing the recorder at 9, then upgrading to flugelhorn. In his mid-­teens he began discovering bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, after his parents bought him his first guitar, and he decided to follow in the footsteps of these music legends. He started his first band, playing at family parties and local venues and became roadie for his friend’s band, DeWolff, who have since gained countrywide fame and led the way for young musicians in the South of Holland.

The EP was recorded at various locations, including the Electrosaurus Southern Sound Studio in the south of the Netherlands. The studio, completely analogue, was recently featured in the Dutch edition of the Guitarist Magazine, and is run by DeWolff front man Pablo van de Poel.

The songs, based on experiences in their day to day life in the south of England, and travelling between the north of the country and Holland, are a combination of folk and story­‐telling pop, infused with other genres. Inspired by the sights and sounds of the city, Brighton is a testament of the band’s love for the relaxed atmosphere, (mostly) sunny summers, and vibrant inhabitants that can be seen on the streets and beach. The second track of the EP, Young Love Blues, is the exception. It was the first song the band wrote, inspired by Laura Marling and written at the Pieters’s family home, it tells a tale woven of pure imagination about an unfortunate couple who meet a dark end. The song was written and recorded in 2 days and was the catalyst for the formation of the band.

Founded in Brighton (UK) in the spring of 2012, Southern Sunrise are a band who are bringing together the sounds of country, blues and folk pop. Inspired by the likes of Laura Marling, Noah and the Whale, The Civil Wars and Fleet Foxes, they create mellow, warm and story‐telling pop songs.

The brains behind the project are Shonagh Macleod, born and raised in York (UK), on lead vocals, and Arjan Pieters, originally from Meers-­Elsloo (NL), on guitar. Their paths crossed in Brighton (UK), where they both studied and started the band. The name ‘Southern Sunrise’ is symbolic of their love for the South Coast city and the conception of the band.

They released their debut EP Brighton on the 1st of June 2013, as a testimony to the British seaside town. After a successful UK tour following the release of their EP the band relocated to the Netherlands to pursue their musical career. The band was joined by bassist Daan Gooren and Remco Gerritsen on the keys.

With this new formation, a second successful EP tour followed, this time throughout the Netherlands. The band have played established Dutch venues like Tivoli Oudegracht, Mezz Breda, and De Nieuwe Nor, opening for golden record winner Ozark Henry and Douwe Bob, winner of Dutch TV show ‘The Best Singer‐Songwriter Of Holland.’ Besides that they played the main hall of Paradiso Amsterdam, the most prestigious venue of The Netherlands and shared festival line‐ups with the likes of Miles Kane, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis and Mister & Mississippi. They also enjoyed regional and national airplay and played live on radio show‘Met Het Oog Op Morgen’ on Radio 1.  

The band hit the ground running in 2014 with two successful live tours throughout The Netherlands. Their most recent achievement is the release of their second EP. The new EP will be released on the 27th of September on Southern Music Records.
