Dutch-English folk pop band Southern Sunrise present their second mini-album titled Feels Like Home, after the successful release of their 2013 debut EP Brighton. 

Inspired by events in their day-to-day life as well as fictional story telling, much like their previous EP Brighton, Southern Sunrise release four tracks in the shape of their new EP titled Feels Like Home. The songs featured on Feels Like Home display a familiar yet fresh sound, combining MacLeod’s serene and soothing vocals with new instruments like the synthesizer on ‘Red Sun Calling’ and the pedal steel on ‘Closer’ and ‘Feels Like Home’, played by guest musician Stefan Wolfs (Catawba River Fox/The Cosmic Carnival).

The subjects of the songs range from (fictional) stories about travelling (‘Red Sun Calling’) and romance (‘Closer’) to real life events like MacLeod’s relationship with her sister ‘Elspeth’ and her initial homesickness, caused by the band’s relocation to The Netherlands on ‘Feels Like Home’, which she was pulled through with the help of her mother’s phone calls. 

The EP, produced by Pablo van de Poel, was recorded in the spiritual home of DeWolff, the analogue Electrosaurus Southern Sound Studio located on the Oudegracht in the city centre of Utrecht. This inspiring and comfortable area, along with the studio has been frequently visited by the band in the past year, and inspired the EP’s title Feels Like Home. The EP was mastered by Roy Brezinski at the Brezinski Basement Studio and includes, besides Stefan Wolfs, guest appearances from Luka van de Poel (drums) and Pablo van de Poel (acoustic guitar).

Founded in Brighton (UK) in the spring of 2012, Southern Sunrise are a band who are bringing together the sounds of country, blues and folk pop. Inspired by the likes of Laura Marling, Noah and the Whale, The Civil Wars and Fleet Foxes, they create mellow, warm and story‐telling pop songs.

The brains behind the project are Shonagh Macleod, born and raised in York (UK), on lead vocals, and Arjan Pieters, originally from Meers-­Elsloo (NL), on guitar. Their paths crossed in Brighton (UK), where they both studied and started the band. The name ‘Southern Sunrise’ is symbolic of their love for the South Coast city and the conception of the band.

They released their debut EP Brighton on the 1st of June 2013, as a testimony to the British seaside town. After a successful UK tour following the release of their EP the band relocated to the Netherlands to pursue their musical career. The band was joined by bassist Daan Gooren and Remco Gerritsen on the keys.

With this new formation, a second successful EP tour followed, this time throughout the Netherlands. The band have played established Dutch venues like Tivoli Oudegracht, Mezz Breda, and De Nieuwe Nor, opening for golden record winner Ozark Henry and Douwe Bob, winner of Dutch TV show ‘The Best Singer‐Songwriter Of Holland.’ Besides that they played the main hall of Paradiso Amsterdam, the most prestigious venue of The Netherlands and shared festival line‐ups with the likes of Miles Kane, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis and Mister & Mississippi. They also enjoyed regional and national airplay and played live on radio show‘Met Het Oog Op Morgen’ on Radio 1.  

The band hit the ground running in 2014 with two successful live tours throughout The Netherlands. Their most recent achievement is the release of their second EP. The new EP will be released on the 27th of September on Southern Music Records.
