In “Tom’s House”, a new audio-drama from artist and writer Jacob Dwyer, we listen to the meanderings of someone who’s returned home for the first time in 15 years. Walking up Haddon Drive he spots the house of an old friend, Tom. The front door is open, so he goes inside. Wandering around the empty Tudor cottage - making cups of tea, rearranging CD collections and zoning in on the minutiae of domestic space - he ruminates on ideas of emotional intimacy, friendship and grief.

"Hello? Hello?" echoes Jacob's voice, searching for a connection inside empty rooms and memories. As we move through the story, the house shifts slowly back to the realm of the living, while upending ideas gestate in Jacob's mind, like bodies floating within bodies. "THE BABY IS LEGIT UPSIDE DOWN!"

With his field recording equipment, much like his trusty Canon HF10 camera, Jacob evokes the cosmic: at one moment zooming in on microscopic dust particles of dead skin moving through the dank air in murmuration, whilst panning out to catch a poetic, universal overview the next.

"Tom’s House" incorporates voice, foley, field recordings and an original soundtrack composed by K. Freund, Kareem Lotfy, Zuza Banasińska and Jacob Oostra.

Three hours of my favourite Muslimgauze tracks, plus a Boss RE-20 delay pedal, recorded live on 24th September 2025 at Ikii, Berlin.

I was first exposed to Muslimgauze in 2017, when Simon Scott opened the Mungo's HiFi stage of Dimensions Festival with an all-Muslimgauze set*. I'm slightly ashamed to say that at the time it wasn't really my thing, but I was intrigued by the sound and I kept my ears open for more in the years that followed. I imagine I had a similar experience to many who cross paths with his music: I picked up a couple of his albums, but his daunting discography of ~200 releases put me off from digging deeper.

Over the past few months I've put in a determined effort to listen through most of it. I discovered a vast expanse of interesting music, a unique soundclash of rhythm, dub and tape loops, all coloured by Bryn Jones's obsession with the Muslim world. I was pleasantly surprised by how much good stuff there is - while there is a lot of repetition, much of it is genuinely hypnotic. It's also raw, experimental and fiercely political.

To help prioritise my digging, I went through several lists of other people's top Muslimgauze releases. One thing that struck me was how different these lists all were, and how little they intersected with my own favourites in the end. Different listeners clearly come away with entirely different takes from his discography. So while I hope this recording piques your interest, I strongly encourage you to go on your own Muslimgauze digging journey and find your own personal favourites. Thanks to the crew at Ikii for giving me the opportunity to share mine.
