Phil Durrant
Free Improviser/Sound Designer/Composer/Modular synthesist/Computer/Mandolin/

Born near London in 1957, Phil Durrant is an improviser/composer/sound artist who has devised his own virtual performance instruments using Reaktor. Recently, he has been performing solo, duo (with Phil Maguire) and trio concerts (with Mark Wastell and Richard Sanderson), using an analogue/digital modular synthesizer system. 

As a violinist (and member of the Butcher/Russell/Durrant trio), he was one of the key exponents of the "group voice approach" style of improvised music. In the late 90s, his trio with Radu Malfatti and Thomas Lehn represented a shift to a more “reductionist” approach.

Durrant’s exploration in the use of live electronics to expand the timbre of the violin, evolved into the creation and building of self-made virtual instruments. His live sampling/treatments duo with John Butcher and his work MIMEO, saw Durrant move from the use of hardware to the use of software in live situations. He has always been keen to transfer the flexibility of playing an acoustic instrument, into his laptop performances.

Durrant also performs regularly with the acoustic/electronic group Trio Sowari (with Bertrand Denzler and Burkhard Beins) and Mark Wastell’s The Seen. In addition, he is an Associate Lecturer at Southampton Solent University.

Phil Durrant has also collaborated and composed site-specific music for a wide variety of choreographers, including Maxine Doyle, Susanne Thomas, and Gill Clarke.

Led by composer saxophonist Matt London Ensemble Entropy is a dynamic new music ensemble / group / band exploring the space between composed contemporary music & free improvisation.

Tony James Morton is an electronic musician and sound artist whose work focuses on real-time systems aesthetics. These systems created have rules and structures, but within the confines of these boundaries there is enough room for improvisation. This allows for a different interpretation each time, creating unique interactions between person and sound. His work has been displayed at; OXO Tower Bargehouse (London, UK) BEAST FEaST 2016/2017 (Birmingham, UK) and Studio 47 (Amsterdam, Netherlands).

​"As an artist I am fascinated in how we interface and improvise with sound. It's in this case that I enjoy creating my own unique interfaces (or instruments) using both hardware and software. My work focuses on creating, what I like to call, audio/visual systems. These systems have rules, but within those created boundaries is enough room for users to improvise and move around the program how they feel. I like the idea of a piece of work never being interpreted the exact same way twice and these systems allow me this freedom to do so."
