An entrance to a sprawling underground structure, forgotten by both time and legend, is unearthed in a barren section of desert for the first time in eons by a freak weather event. The locals who discover this structure are astounded by such a discovery. They conclude that this must be a tomb of sorts, and insist that it be left alone, preserved, and respected, for they know through ancestral fable what caliber of undying ancient magick just may reside within.

Inevitably, the academics and the profiteering elite catch wind of this discovery, and set up an expedition, despite the protests of those in the local community. The expedition gathers in haste and sets forth, eventually arriving at the structure. They waste no time in being the first to lay their claim, and so they venture inside.

As they proceed, each member of the expedition gradually starts to feel deeply uneasy, for reasons they can't explain. They slowly begin to realize this structure is not only much bigger than its entrance implied, but it appears it was not used as a tomb at all. Covering every square inch of the walls are otherworldly artifacts of archaic design; there are no relics of reverence or keepsakes of memoriam decorating the walls, but instead weapons, amongst other brutal devices and contraptions whose design could only have been intended for torture, or even the harvest of organic material. Similarly, the structure's cavernous hallways appear to have been built like a maze, and there are no sarcophagi present. Some begin to insist that something is amiss, or advise withdrawal to discuss their findings, but they are urged ahead by the greed of the man funding the expedition.

Eventually, as they enter deeper into the depths, they all reach the same conclusion of what lies before them - this structure was indeed not a tomb built for something dead, or to keep the living out and its treasures unplundered... but rather, a labyrinth designed to keep "something" powerful inside. Once again, their concerns are dismissed by the man with the most to gain, and the group presses on at his behest.

Finally, they reach a massive ritualistic antechamber, with demonic runes and arcane embellishments carved deeply into the ground, spiraling outwards radially from what is assumed to be the center of the room. The area beyond the carvings is so utterly dark, that none of the group's lights are able to illuminate the way ahead. The rich man yet again chastises his peers for their hesitation, and steps forth impatiently into the vantablack curtain before them, forever vanishing beyond the perimeter of the infernal runes.

Abruptly, a psychic scream echoes through each of their minds, and the antechamber's enormity is revealed as it is bathed in a dull, crimson hue of illumination. At the source of this unsettling incandescence lies multiple swirling eyes - all beady and pupilless, yet orchestrated in perfect monocular synchrony, with a single shared gaze fixed unwaveringly on those standing before it.

As their sight begins to adjust, the mortals bear witness to the sinister entity now awakened before them. It is clear that the entity is comprised of no organic matter, but is blanketed in darkness - no further detail can be discerned, and its composition can only be described as that of pure, cosmic horror and unfettered malice. The entity unleashes its eons of unsatiated bloodlust in a destructive wrath, upon all things around and beyond, as the mortals scatter and flee from their inevitable doom...

... and some, by proxy, leading the entity out through the labyrinth, and into the desert. 

Perhaps the catacomb's intrusion satisfied some criteria of an infernal contract - releasing the entity from the ancient magick binding it, as an "invitation" - by way of the mortals awakening and then fleeing from the entity.

The entity sets forth into the world beyond, and begins its campaign to feast its endless hunger upon the rest of the universe, indiscriminately.
