Bringing you an exploration of wandering musings for Space Cast 004 is local artist per sonar (@personar1). Ed Wilks is an eminent composer and sound designer working with visual and sonic mediums and an expert curator of ambient and experimental sounds, so we knew he would be the perfect fit for this series. Ed first captured me with his outstanding Ambient Exploration Series, which have been the soundtrack to many walks, meditations and introspective moments for myself and I'm sure for many others. These mixes were originally live sets for a series of yoga classes which he later released on his Soundcloud as a ‘small public musical offering, that I hoped might help ease some of the anxiety that was unfolding in our world’.

The latest collaboration from IVAANA ( @ivaana_20) and Sophie Bullen comes at an auspicious moment, as spring fills us with warmth and excitement, chases the cold from our bones and fills the trees with budding growth. This glorious mix from Ivaana traverses sensitive and gentle scapes, guiding us into the new season. Sophie Bullen’s response to the mix is full of life, with remnants and many layers of what came before. Transformation is slow and steady yet palpable, welcomed and inevitable.

For the sixth release of Space Cast we welcome a very special selector, Cash. Cash's music collection is influenced by and spans across many different genres. This mix is a nod to his musical beginnings playing in melodic hardcore and punk bands and his love for the shoegaze movement. Cash has created an expansive and breath taking mix which leaves you with a feeling of elation, stillness and contentment, like the feeling of taking a deep deep breath and sighing it out. This mix is deep, moving and emotional with swirling vocals and waves of distortion. Dive in and let is wash over you.

A rumination on control and delay

We are pleased to present to you the first Space Cast Premier from one of our talented artists. Many of you will know him from his gorgeous release on Space Cast 004 as Tres Passings. Now, as an evolution of past monikers, forms and ideas - per sonar (@personar1) has emerged. The first release from this nascent project, ‘The River Runs from the Weather Maker’ is a visual and sonic pairing, intertwined in their creation and interaction.

As a composer, per sonar is in constant conversation with moving image, with either the visuals informing the sonic or vice versa. For The River Runs from the Weather Maker they were created in tandem using an audio-reactive visualiser as a compositional tool.

‘When I first started work on this piece, I selected sonic elements that produced the best visual response (which tended to be low frequency and/or percussive). After reaching the limits of visualiser as a stand-alone compositional tool, I continued working on the piece with the live visualiser running in the background. It ended up serving as real-time feedback for whenever I needed direction for a new layer or section.’

This release is a perfect display of the artist's antipodean exploration of the relationship between sound and vision, and the play of conventional hierarchies between them. This work is a dialectic between two elements, a back-and-forth exchange of sound and visuals, leading to a synthesis that transcends the individual mediums and gives rise to an engaging, multisensory experience.

The piece is grounded with an inkling of nostalgia. It begins with a gentle patter of watery notes and tender chords that echo throughout the track and unfurl with sonic fluidity. Instruments continue to seamlessly layer upon each other, delicately entwining until the tide changes, moving elsewhere for just a moment with a sense of unease, before resolving softly again as the water trickles away. The subtle use of found sounds and field recordings create a feeling of familiarity, without giving anything solid to grasp onto.

Similarly, the visual component is a clever play between abstract and representational imagery. Stirring memories of landscapes gazed through car windows on long drives overlaid with a kaleidoscopic pattern that flutters and sinks/syncs in and out of things we know and things we don't know. per sonar calls upon the visual narrative at key sonic moments which elicit echoes of memories, oneiric in nature, attempting to resurface.

It’s a pleasure to present the latest collaboration, a simple love story, in all its complexities, from dj and architect, Modulor ( @iammodulor ) and multidisciplinary artist Marisa Mu (https://marisamu.com/).

With an introduction that acts as a manifesto for the entire selection, Teresa has created a mixtape that carries the listener away on reverberating synth lines and through stripped back and natural soundscapes, traversing elements that seem to have sprung from a forest on their own accord, yet are simultaneously not of this world. 

Marisa has captured this journey through her signature use of bold yet soft colours, every transition and shift in energy is captured, and translated into her own language - colour, oils, pastels and crayons layered across each other to tell a story. Each little movement and brushstroke on the canvas captures the array of different feelings, sounds and movement.

It's an honour to present the first edition of the Space Cast mix series by good friend and wonderful human, Eric aka Lava Brain (@lava-brain). Eric is an exceptionally talented dj, producer and live visual artist. This year he released his debut single on his Bandcamp featuring two very distinct tracks, one of them a 19 minute long ambient exploration. Eric has created a stunning mix simultaneously capturing a sense of lightness and depth which has you drifting through subtle shifts in consciousness.

'I really love the concept for this mix series, diving into and appreciating the spaces between spaces, as well as the reflexive nature of the creation of art. Slowing down and getting lost in the spaciousness of music has been a great source of escape and solace for me this year. Spending less time listening to club-focused music has also inspired me to spend more time reflecting in nature and experimenting with some production of my own, using organic field recordings as a catalyst. Thanks to Space Cast Melbourne for allowing me to share this side of my music collection, putting together this mix felt like a meditative experience for me.'

001 Lava Brain

We are so pleased to present the second Space Cast mix, a collection of soothing classical music brought to you from an extremely talented and passionate artist, Meg 4x4.

'The pieces of music in the mix are mainly avant-garde, improvisational, meditative, and classical. The track, ‘Méditation’ is my favourite piece to play on the violin, so I was glad to find a downloadable performance track of it to use! One musician in particular to mention is ‘Dixon’s violin’ who uses a 5 stringed electronic violin and a looping system to create a remarkable symphony sound. If you listen to the first two tracks again, you may be surprised to know that this is all produced by one instrument. Gaelynn Lea is also a stand out musician, who plays her violin as a cello and her bow as if she were playing a bass. She is a disability advocate, who moves herself through life in an electronic wheelchair. I was blown away and inspired when I came across Gaelynn and her talent.'

Sam Marsh, aka Billus (@billusmoon)is a talented dj and producer who has been informing and shaping Melbournes music scene for many years through various projects like the legendary @lifeworld. Billus has a beautiful collection of mixtapes for unfurling, emerging, and sitting around, so we thought it was fitting to ask him to contribute to this project. Billus’ taste in music is like no other, his mixes are always inspiring and intriguing, and this is no exception. Lock in!

Space Cast is a not-for-profit arts initiative that aims to connect and support local artists through a synaesthetic exploration of music and art. Space Cast was established in 2020 as a digital offering of curated visual art and sound collaborations and has since evolved into a showcase of events and exhibitions.  

Space Cast has a focus on ambient, downtempo and experimental music and abstract art. The project aims to explore ideas of space and stillness, connection, slowing down and the innate connection between two these two creative fields. 

Space Cast operates to support diverse and emerging artists financially, foster a creative community and facilitate thoughtful collaboration. Each visual outcome is available to purchase online as a limited edition print, with the profits going directly back to the artists.

Space Cast acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land on which we create, the Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation and we pay our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.
