Puce Mary is Danish experimental and noise artist, best known for her piercing live performances and full-length releases on Copenhagen’s Posh Isolation and Berlin’s PAN Records. Debuting with several homemade cassettes of noise in the darkness to transmitting ideas and feelings through an increasingly complex musical vocabulary, Frederikke Hoffmeier represents a new era of industrial, noise and experimental music, taking a very thoughtful and emotional approach to the slow-evolving layers of distorted sound.

From a series of skins worn by the British-Egyptian audiovisual artist, creative-computing designer, writer, producer and composer Sarah Badr, FRKTL is a classically trained multi-instrumentalist, subjecting her piano, violin and guitar to heavy levels of processing, utilizing live sampling and improvisation, vocal manipulation, field recordings and generative rhythms, composing and independently releasing immersive, hypnotic and haunting explorations of sound.

With references to early techno, new wave and punk, @SalemRashid ’s work as a producer and performer binds post-industrial soundscapes with intricate overlapping rhythms. Relentless, saturated and self-sufficient, his sound tells of a looming future. Rashid is conceptual artist, composer, creative director and founder of Bedouin Records, an independent music, art, and fashion label he founded in 2014, based in Berlin, Dubai, Osaka and recently Bangkok, and its subsidiary Bastakiya Tapes. The label has released more than 30 albums, on vinyl, CD and cassette. Among its releases are works that have earned international acclaim from composers such as Merzbow, Pan Daijing, Tzusing, and Constantine Skourlis.

@ConstantineSkourlis is a musician, composer and producer from Athens, Greece. Using an array of guitars, amplifiers, orchestral instruments, synthesizers, old tube radios and field recordings he blurs the boundaries of genres and draws inspiration from a wide range of musical influences such as death metal, classical minimalism, drone and baroque. Throughout his body of work, he scores the end of the world; from his debut album Hades, released on Bedouin Records and named after the Greek god of the underworld, to his scores for film and theatrical productions of epic tragedies like Don Quixote and Richard II. His latest and sophomore LP Eternal Recurrence, sees him pursue his vision towards even more ominous territories, delivering a cathartic release for the chaos that’s permeated throughout this year.

Club Matryoshka and CTM came together for CTM's 22nd festival edition to revisit the Alpha Lebbeus world, 40 years after we first explored the expansive planet together. With this follow-up collaboration, Club Matryoshka expanded on this unique Minecraft world, together with a story-based gameplay narrative co-developed with artist collective Children of Cyberspace. The six-hour journey was soundtracked by live and DJ sets created by a diverse group of emerging artists from around the globe, curated in a collaborative spirit by Club Matryoshka and CTM.

Founded in 2019, Club Matryoshka is an international virtual venue, home and safe haven to underground and unorthodox music mutants. Based in the Philippines and built in Minecraft, Club Matryoshka was founded and developed by a community of gamers, artists, and musicians. similarobjects, dot.jaime, cavill, ahju$$i, JohnPope, and Maengo69 felt a lack of freedom and acceptance in club scenes, both in Manila and abroad, and sought alternative avenues for sharing their work and finding community. The club opened in July 2019, barely a year before COVID-19 would bring in-person events and nightlife to a halt.

CTM 2021: FRKTL at Club Matryoshka x CTM

Is language a false witness? Is promise information? Exploring the techno-politics of the voice, friendship, counter-information and war, Jessika Khazrik’s composition ‘Only Distance Has a Name .x. Artificial Intelligence Is Work’ attempts to ceremonially subvert the premise of AI as labor that extimately auto-denies itself in alchemical rationalizations. This composition was premiered live in 9-channels at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in 2018 as part of ‘The Exhaustion Project’ curated by Abhijan Toto.  

Recently, the voice has been presented as an agnotologically ubiquitous yet impossible biometric, that could exponentially be replicated through resources as easily accessible as seconds of recorded speech. If singularity is denied to the voice as matter, then what is the promised multiplicity abundant under artificial intelligence as a recognitive accumulation that feigns what is being said yet learns and teaches, most often us secretly? This AI-aided performative composition is conceived, laboured up and trained out of these questions.

Through the statement “Artificial Intelligence Is Work”, the second act grapples with AI as a division, distribution and re-arrangement of labor with a cryptographic and alchemical core. Rather than abolishing work as advanced in the endless dream of automation, the increasing spread of AI creates new forms of work and learning i.e., a re-distribution of labor, alienations and a re-organization of knowledge.

If we look at the ethics purported by some strands of machine learning that build its datasets from data shared by users online, collated and re-used in hidden network architectures and inferences without their explicit knowledge or from images collated by surveillance cameras of pedestrians and passers by that happen to be crossing a monitored environment, we see that so far with Artificial Intelligence – and specifically within machine learning, the tautological statement that ‘everything computable becomes work (whether you know it or not)’ holds a greater truth value than ‘work will become obsolescent’. Can an incomputable cryptography exist?

Jessika Khazrik (b. 1991 Beirut, based between Beirut and Berlin) is an artist, technologist, electronic music producer and writer whose indisciplinary practice ranges from composition to ecotoxicology, machine learning, cryptography, performance, visual art and history of science and music. Khazrik holds BAs in Linguistics and in Theatre from the Lebanese University and a MS in Art, Culture and Technology from MIT where she was awarded the Ada Lovelace prize. In 2012-13, she was a fellow at Home Workspace Program in Ashkal Alwan, in 2018-19, a fellow at the Digital Earth and in 2020, guest faculty at HfK Bremen. While concurrently working as technologist and researcher in different collective and institutional settings, her work has been presented at The Normandy Landfill, the Stanford Research Institute, CTM Festival, the Arab Image Foundation, Kunsthalle Wien, Les Urbaines, the Museum of Modern Art Warsaw, Times Museum Guangzhou, LUMA Foundation, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Amnesty International, Center of Documentary Arts and Research at UC Santa Cruz, her house, the internet, secrets and Theater der Welt, among others.

Debut release for The Fear Ratio's Mark Broom and James Ruskin under their 'Deadhand' alias, which proceeds on a strictly experimental hip-hop tip, accompanied as they are here by 4 x world scratch champion DJ Prime Cuts (of The Scratch Perverts) and illbient rap legend Sensational, who brings his characteristic broken charm to the EP's itchy, spartan production vibes: "Step into my office, now we sparkin' it... I spit the isms in yer ear... you better recognise it's raw shit from orbit."

This pairing with Sens makes total sense: Distinct from Mark and James' work as The Fear Ratio, their Deadhand project delivers something closer to 90s illbient in any case: extending the boom-bap era of hip-hop production with elements of hallucinogenic dystopianism, the energy of the EP nevertheless vibes playfully: Given the dispiriting global situation at present, the EP title 'Meanwhile' might simply refer to getting on with things in spite of all the cultural and political misendeavor the era will no doubt be long remembered for. Despite the global health pandemic and the looming spectre of wide-scale environmental collapse, little despair or surrender prevails here, but rather a hankering to attempt a few tripped-out experiments.

Three remixes bring further twists of the screw: A cosmic break flex from ETCH resituates Sensational amidst the magmic glow of Reaktor bass ensembles, while DJ Prime Cuts repurposes 7" soul gold by way of a more 'traditional' SP1200 approach. 90s trip-hop pioneer and graffiti legend REQ steps up with all the painterly flair he is rightly renowned for, obliterating the Monster Orchestra's classic 'I Can't Stop' stab towards a double dose of galactic melancholia.

Spaces of Faux Intimacies is the first part of a series of interventions unfolding over a year, exploring intimacy in the wake of socially distanced capitalism, digital technologies and the pandemic. 

Today’s neoliberal, hyper-connected society, has capitalised the very notion of intimacy. Screened semblances of emotional abundance are promised to us within only a few swipes away while corporate conglomerates are profiting from our desire for physical and emotional connections. As the pandemic and the accompanying social distancing measures are driving us even further apart, and amid the already existing turbulence around the world, how can we work together to produce new channels of care, social resilience, and affective solidarity? 

"Spaces of faux intimacies" brings together artists of various disciplines to contribute to the discussion with individually commissioned auditory works.
