From the Archives is a series focused on the appreciation of times past, where we will be sharing a range of never before heard recordings from the 90s and 00s.

For our first instalment we welcome one of Ireland’s best and most prestigious DJ’s who has a history of playing techno for 30 years, Jon Hussey. He has been so kind to share a mix recording of his from 2005.

“Around that time I was playing frequently in Slovakia and it includes some killer Slovak tracks from that era with artists like Loktibrada, Rumenige and Takaaki Itoh who was based in Bratislava during that time featuring. The mix also contains tracks from the Birmingham / UK side which was very closely linked in sound and ethos with artists like Regis, Surgeon, Mark Broom and New Yorks Birmingham connection Function!

It was a truly brilliant time for heavier broken rhythm Techno and definitely a golden time in the Slovak Techno history, amazing to be involved and part of the experience there and hopefully captures some of the energy and vibes from then which has also heavily influenced what is happening today with Rhythmic Techno.”

Podcast 352 is a very special Hybrid set by TAPEFEED. Their unique playing style sees Alessandro Boni play on three CDJ's while his partner, fellow Italian Rick Vayo plays live on a Digitak and Octatrak.

Fabric residents since 2021, the duo are known for a vibrant fusion of styles, ranging from driving techno grooves to sophisticated experimental tones. 

They skillfully blend raw percussion, tribal influences, and a dynamic groove approach, spanning from 4/4 beats to more intricate rhythms, all while maintaining a pronounced UK bass influence.

Sam Coates took to techno like a diligent pupil, falling in love with the genre through labels like CLR in the late '00s. It didn't take long for the student to surpass his proverbial teachers. Almost immediately, the Manchester native was putting out pitch-perfect, functional techno records with everything intricately balanced. The requisite move to Berlin only sealed his fate as a future techno luminary, and by now, based in Kyiv, he's one of techno's most reliable, yet exciting, workhorses. Setaoc Mass records (and those on his label, SK_eleven) are minimalist but colossal, deceptively simple but not easy to pull off. 

We've praised him in these pages for his "sense of economy—how to get the hardest impact out of just a few elements," and that's the idea behind his RA Podcast as well. Put together from records old and new, and intricately layered, Coates's mix is like a time-travelling wormhole connecting disparate eras from techno, and highlighting the genre's most timeless attributes: mechanistic rhythms, careful pacing, rudimentary melodies made out of the strangest sounds and, of course, the power of the bass drop. It's hard to imagine anything that sounds more capital-T techno than this mix, which is a high compliment. It's easy to hear why his records and DJ sets are only more in demand from techno heads across the geographical and generational spectrum.

The DifferentSound Podcast #284 welcomes Sunil Sharpe! Sunil Sharpe is one of techno's true people. Known primarily for his fast-moving, skilful style and dynamic selections on the decks, Sunil has carved out a unique place in the global scene, representing electronic music in a range of different ways over the years - as a DJ, producer, label owner, party organiser, radio host, writer, educator and nightlife advocate. Sunil's reputation as a "turntable wizard" is long established from his early days as a DJ in Dublin (when local competition was fierce and word of mouth meant everything). JakoJako (@jakojako_live) always wanted to make music and her self-confessed hyperactivity ultimately led to her getting the most joy out of playing about with machines and patching up synths. These days the Berghain resident is a celebrated live act and DJ who draws on the considerable knowledge she picked up working at Berlin's legendary synth shop SchneidersLaden, but she has also worked on several high-profile motion sensor dance projects at places like The Royal Albert Hall. Her smart sound designs and unique rhythms have landed on Leisure System, Tresor and Figure and she has a new EP coming on Mute this June.

Her mix for us this week features a sneak preview of one of the tracks from that EP as well as mixing up music from Alaric, Siege, Altinbas and many more. It's full of high-speed sounds couched loosely in techno but with moods and textures borrowed from industrial, minimal and even trance as things reach an emotional peak late on. Though she broke through as a live act, this set shows JakoJako can now speak just as freely through the decks.
