As the furthest flung representative of the Doss Clan DJs, Shanghai based dmandoneit has been mixing his way across dancefloors since the end of the 90s. Walking round the house with a boombox blasting the original Apache by the Shadows on cassette as a kid, the influence of hiphop was never far away in his early DJ career and it was during this time that he learnt how to scratch and cut on up the turntables performing in underground events around Chester. 

Promoting the Scratch Yer Head events in High Wycombe led to performances alongside turntablist legends like DJ Kentaro, DJ Woody, the Scratch Perverts and DJ Yoda. With the explosion of grime and dubstep, his sound began to veer away from the boombap and into more bass-influenced sounds and since moving to Shanghai in 2008, dman’s been playing heavy heavy bass music in some of Shanghai’s underground venues like Shelter, Logo and Lune as a resident at Wonky Kong and guest at Sweatshop with the Phreaktion Crew. 

That early confusion over the Apache song clearly had an influence as partygoers at Get Lucky, his other Shanghai residency, can testify. Playing guilty pleasures alongside deep bassy goodness, mixing disparate genres is still a passion. When discovering electroswing helped him fall in love with the city he calls home when walking around and re-imagining the roaring 20s of Shanghai with bass-influenced jazz songs, another group of records were added to his digital milk crate. 

Alongside Beardslap (also part of the Phreaktion Crew) his newest project sees him creating live dance music using a collection synths, drum machines and turntable trickery to work the magic on the dancefloor as one half of Galvanism.

Some people think that as a DJ you should stick to one genre and work it till it’s done – dmandoneit delights in bringing different genres together over the course of an evening, marrying their parts and working them together to help you see the connections.
