A piglet is born beneath a weeping moon, into a barn that smells of mildew, secrets, and wet straw theology. The rafters groan like they’ve seen too much—and frankly, they have. He’s pink, plump, and entirely too tender for a place like this. His laugh? Inappropriate. Musical. Downright suspicious.

The Boar, his father, is a pillar of the community—helpful, hearty, always chewing something. But there’s something too practiced about that smile… something filed down, like a tusk.

The Hen, his mother, quotes scripture like she’s got God on speed dial. She calls his softness “divine,” then tries to scrub it off with holy water and cold washcloths. Every time he twinkles with joy, her feathers puff up like she’s detecting a demon. It’s maternal instinct meets spiritual warfare.

The barn holds its breath. Something remembers. And already, the straw is whispering.

Sinfully ordinary. “Just a mineral block,” the elders chirp, their snouts turned skyward. “For cows. Harmless.”

But to him, it is ecstasy incarnate.

He licks it once—just once!—and the barn softens. Time sighs. Misery folds itself into a gentle hum. It tastes like forgetting, like velvet over old wounds. He returns to it with devotion, with hunger, with the kind of reckless reverence usually reserved for lovers, or particularly good gossip.

He never asks who left it there.

He doesn’t need to.

The Saltlick wants to be found.
And he, poor creature, wants nothing more than to forget.

Hugs last a beat too long, warm and suspicious.
There’s applause after every confession, as if shame were just another form of cabaret.

And Boars—there are always Boars. Smiling too widely. Nodding like ancient monks who’ve memorized the ending and still show up for the show. Their tusks glint with practiced sympathy.

The piglet claps on cue. He smiles like a pro.

But deep in his belly, something begins to squirm.

This hour-long descent into choreographed vulnerability is soundtracked by the emotionally haunted grooves of Demuir, OFF / GRID, and SOBSTORY. Ah yes, The Ritual—though in truth, it had all the pomp and sacred gravity of a grocery store kidnapping. No incense. No chanting. No shadowy cloaks or ceremonial daggers. Just a trusting piglet, a mother strung out on prayer beads and wishful thinking, and a Boar from The Circle—that folding-chair fellowship of forgiveness and suspiciously convenient amnesia—who said, “Just an afternoon. A little support. Maybe some froyo.”

The Hen, exhausted and desperate for divine intervention (or at least a nap), handed the piglet over like a warm casserole. “He’s in good hands,” they said.

And oh, he was.

The Boar was beloved. Vetted. A “safe space in cargo shorts.” But the moment they were alone, the mask dropped like a cheap curtain. First came the seduction: soothing voice, affirming nods, the hypnotic rhythm of recovery speak. Then—without warning, without metaphor—he pulled out a power drill.

A real one. Corded. Heavy. The kind that lives in garages next to tarps and shame.

The piglet didn’t scream. He fled inward. Mind gone, body blinking, like a doll who’s just realized it’s made of flesh. That’s when the Boar began his work: gentle as a hymn, merciless as dogma. Psychological triggers. Sweet nothings laced with sulfur. Images of muck—filthy, glistening, almost holy in their perversity. Not enough to understand. Just enough to echo later.

When it was over, the Boar handed him a juice box and whispered, “You’re doing great.” Then he dropped him off like a library book.

The Circle clapped.
The Hen exhaled.
And the piglet?

He smiled like a good little survivor, rewired for obedience, carrying a secret so dark it hadn’t learned language yet.

Thus concluded The Ritual—no robes, no relics. Just trauma with a parking validation.

And yet what greets the piglet in the city is something altogether more… decorative. A couch already broken in by ghosts. Glowsticks strewn across the carpet like artifacts from a rave that may or may not have actually happened.

The checks arrive on time. The family is kind in that distant, apologetic way. The government is—well—generous, in the way a vending machine is generous: impersonal, humming, and mostly concerned with staying upright.

No one asks much of him.

The Saltlick waits by the window. Smaller than he remembers. Or maybe he’s just larger now—no one has told him, and he wouldn’t dare ask. He licks it without ceremony, like one might stroke a scar or reread an old love letter. It glows faintly. Affirmatively.

He remembers nothing of The Ritual. Only a dull pressure behind his eyes, a twitch in the mirror, and an inexplicable fondness for things that shimmer.

He watches television with the sound off.
He makes plans he does not keep.
He smiles into mirrors—not to admire, but to remember.

A new life, they said.

It is quiet. It is soft.
It is terrifying.
