“Echoes Basement” is a work that unfolds as a sonic map of the deepest and most hidden nooks and crannies of big cities, those spaces where life goes on in silence, far from public view, but that pulsate with a unique and enveloping energy. Throughout five tracks, Darkduction offers a detailed exploration of these hidden and inaccessible places, inspired by the cold urban nights where darkness takes on greater prominence, becoming another character within the soundscape.

This EP not only reflects the mystery and density of the most forgotten urban areas, but also captures the duality of these spaces: places where the industrial and the human are mixed, generating an atmosphere full of contradictory emotions. On the one hand, there is the feeling of isolation and desolation, but on the other, the constant pulsation of subway life that never stops moving, creating a vibrant contrast between the apparent silence and the hidden bustle.

The five tracks that make up “Echoes Basement” are designed to take the listener on a deep and meditative journey. From the first sound, there is a subway tension that gradually builds, fueled by heavy, repetitive rhythms that mimic the pulse of the city. Deep, enveloping basslines serve as the foundation for the construction of soundscapes reminiscent of echoes resonating in tunnels, abandoned basements and lonely streets. Throughout each track, Darkduction plays with the dynamics of silence and noise, using percussive elements to create hypnotic transitions that drag the listener deeper and deeper into this gloomy universe.

The atmosphere of this EP is strongly influenced by the later hours of the night, when the city transforms into an almost alien space, where light is scarce and shadows take over. The sonic textures of “Echoes Basement” evoke the sensation of walking through deserted alleys or exploring abandoned buildings, where the cold of the night is felt intensely, and each echo seems to amplify the loneliness of the environment. The melodies, though understated, are interwoven with abrasive and subtly distorted layers of sound, adding an industrial character that reinforces the feeling of being in an inhospitable and unfamiliar place.

Each track is composed with surgical precision, balancing elements of deep techno with abstract sounds that suggest a hidden narrative. The beats are designed not only for the dancefloor, but to generate an immersive experience that demands attention. Darkduction creates a soundscape full of contrasts: what seems familiar soon becomes strange, and what starts as a linear progression quickly transforms into something unexpected, making the listener constantly question their perception of reality.

“Echoes Basement” thus becomes an EP that not only seeks to make one dance, but invites an introspective exploration, guiding listeners through the darkest corners of their own psyche, as much as the city around them. The tracks, though marked by their rhythmic and sonic coherence, are full of small details that reveal more with each listen, always offering a new layer of meaning. From empty spaces echoing with distant echoes to lingering beats that simulate the heartbeat of the city, this EP encapsulates a unique and deeply immersive experience.

Albert van Abbe has tied up a Gesamtkunstwerk for his first record on shtum. The timelessly designed techno tracks are wrapped into wonderful artwork by the Dutchman himself, the track titles of avantgarde poet Daan Mol and a piece of short fiction by Swedish author Björn Jumme, accompany the music perfectly.

A field of red lips. Swaying, swelling, seeping. Harsh sounds fall from the sky and perish in the thick undergrowth. Fragrant, glistening nectar exiting the red mouths, dripping smoothly down on the leaves below. The earth quivers. Soon they’ll be gone, the red lips. Whispers of death in the cool morning breeze. This is what excites them so. Red soil, blood and ash. Fearless bees buzzing with life drink greedily and are rewarded with silence. The sound of translucent wings losing momentum; minuscule sawtooth waves morphing into sines. The red field listens with hunger.
