Few people bring a truly original sound to house music. At a relatively young age, Hamburgs Martin Stimming did just that, demonstrating a sophisticated yet accessible sound that is beyond his years.

Two years after hooking up with Solomuns Diynamic Music, his 2008 breakthrough hit Una Pena made the electronic world sit up and take notice, and before long acclaimed labels like Freerange, liebe*detail, Buzzin´ Fly, Green and Poker Flat were snapping up his work. 2009 saw him release his immaculate debut album Reflections to great acclaim, cementing his reputation as one of the most exciting new producers of his generation. 

His second album, Liquorice, eschews the normal kick-clap/snare template by and large to explore more interesting and progressive territories, but always with that trademark magpie-like sense of texture, emotion and discovery. 

His productions are filled with a multitude of his own unique, charismatic field recordings, and he never uses the same sample more than once. 

2010 saw him pick up an award for Best Newcomer at the Ibiza DJ Awards, following on from his live show (Stimming does not DJ) stunning the crowds at the islands legendary Pacha, and the finest danceries around the world Πfrom Berlins Panoramabar to Sao Paulo´s D-Edge, Brussels Fuse, London´s fabric and Paris Rex, and plenty more beyond. 

Remixes for the likes of Sascha Funke, Claude VonStroke, Deadmau5, Stephan Bodzin and Tom Novy to name but a few have further spread his influence amongst the discerning house and tech community, and cemented his reputation as one of the scene´s most exceptional producers.

Clearly, Martin Stimming is a precious talent indeed. But then again, not everyone loves liquorice...

Willem Boogman – Composer

General
Willem Boogman was born in 1955 and grew up near the river IJssel (Netherlands).

Study
Willem studied Philosophy at the University of Utrecht for a year (1974-1975). Then he went to the Royal Conservatory in The Hague to study composition with Peter Schat and Louis Andriessen. He completed his studies with Ton de Leeuw at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam in 1983.

Compositions
For his compositions Willem Boogman searches into the fundamentals of music. He finds inspiration in Stockhausen’s theoretical work, Varèse’s music and the work of Mondrian.
Ideas that are directly related to today’s life, or to existing music form the basics of his compositions: the hours of a natural day in ‘Day Daily - The Hours’, dance in ‘Raving’, In ’Sternenrest’ the sound of the stars (derived from the low frequency waves stars emit), the eternal joy of love in ‘Gioiosamente Canto’ / ’Liefde een woning’ [‘Love A Living’]. 
Recently he started a series of compositions (‘modulationes’) in which he transforms existing music into another musical reality, for example ‘Distant Voices’ on riffs of popmusic, ’Intermezzi’ and ‘Ihr Tore’ both on pieces by Bach.

Willem composes orchestral works (Radio Philharmonic Orchestra), chamber music (Asko Ensemble, Slagwerk Den Haag, Spectra Ensemble, Ives Ensemble, Ensemble Klang), and choral music (Nederlands Kamerkoor, Asko Kamerkoor, Schola Heidelberg). He also writes for small ensembles, soloists (the series ‘Genietingen’) and for theatre (Toneelgroep Warns) as well as music theatre (in collaboration with director Sandra Macrander).

In February 2019 the Orgelpark in Amsterdam organized a Composer Portrait of Boogman with an overview of his recent compositions.

Other activities
Willem Boogman participated in the Asko Ensemble’s Workshop Project from 1980 to 1984, a collaboration between composers and instrumentalists. Through this project, he acquired knowledge of music in its broadest range.

From 2003 to 2018 he was artistic director of the Asko Kamerkoor (Asko Chamber Choir), a choir of semi-professional singers that is specialized in contemporary vocal music.

Willem has also written several articles, for example on Rudolf Escher’s choral music, on his own works ‘Genietingen’ and ‘La disciplina dei sentimenti’, and on modernism in music.

Kees Tazelaar (*1962) followed courses in Sonology in Utrecht and The Hague, and later studied composition under Jan Boerman at the Royal Conservatoire. He has been teaching at the Institute of Sonology since 1993 and has been head of the institute since 2006. His electronic music features a combination of formalisation, richness of sound and a compositional approach to sound spatialisation.

As well as a composer, Kees Tazelaar is a historian, who has specialised in the early years of electronic music in the Netherlands and Germany. He has twice been the Edgard Varèse Guest Professor at the Technische Universität Berlin, where he earned his PhD in 2013 with the dissertation "On the Threshold of Beauty: Philips and the Origins of Electronic Music in the Netherlands 1925–1965" (ISBN 978-94-6208-065-2).
