The 7th edition of Seanaps Festival took place from 21 - 24 September 2023 in Leipzig. Under the umbrella theme of “Composing Future”, the festival highlighted transdisciplinary approaches in experimental music, art, and culture by offering an evolving forum of concerts, installations, interventions, film screenings, workshops, listening sessions, a label market, club night, talks, and DJ sets.
With a temporary radio station in Westwerk, Seanaps Radio accompanied the festival events, invited participating artists for conversations, and presented independent radio works and performances by local artists and musicians. Seanaps Radio was broadcast in cooperation with Sphere Radio, and temporarily also broadcast on FM on Radio Blau 99.2 in Leipzig and Radio Corax 95.9 in Halle (Saale).

Hi i’m Gigi — he/his — Austin, TX — I was a childhood ice hockey star

How is everything going with you right now?

I have been fortunate enough to be well.. been using this year off from work to dive into a practice and learn some discipline.

How did you get your dj name?

I got it from my partner, Mimi — she flipped my original g-name into gigi & it stuck. I never liked my birth name much anyway + it’s cute to match.

Who currently inspires your music-wise?

ry, tito fuego/mister water wet, charles, bobby, nueen, boundary, jel, purelink, pascäal, ian kim judd, jung dj, shiner, downstairs j, hysterical love project,  perila, oli/px, thurlow joyce+ many more.. so many friends exploring inspiring places these days

If you had to describe yourself as a flower,which one would it be and why? 

Mimi says “frost flowers because they’re ephemeral”

Favorite weird drug/mind altering experience?

Sensory deprivation tank before the rave at Shirley’s Temple (r.i.p.)
What was your first gig? How did it go? 

A show put together by Ben Aqua at an upstairs club on downtown Congress that I don’t recall. I was 18 & had only started making music on ableton a few months prior, and played a live set that mostly consisted of pressing play on a 30 min composed production mix with a little knob twiddling & dj drop triggering. considering that, I’d say it went pretty well

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

I think it’s obvious, but increased representation without tokenism. also, turn away from the dj & look at your fellow dancers.

Any cool releases upcoming for Gi Gi this year? 

I don’t want to speak too soon, but I do have a couple of records in the pipeline with quiet time & index, both of which I’m very excited about. working on some more uptempo material as kept that should be seeing the light of day soon as well.

Gregor Pfeffer ist Klangkünstler, Musiker und Komponist und lebt und arbeitet in Leipzig. Er arbeitet mit Sound und abstrakter elektronischer Musik in Installationen, Performances und Kontexten von Musik, Kunst, Film und Radio. Er hat einen Masterabschluss in Sound Studies an der UdK Berlin.

Miki Yui ist eine Künstlerin und Komponistin aus Tokio mit Wohnsitz in Düsseldorf, Deutschland. Auf dem Seanaps Festival ist ihre vierkanalige Klanginstallation "Plant Music, 2022" zu hören, die inspiriert ist von einer Bleistiftzeichnung von Joseph Beuys Bleistiftzeichnung mit dem Titel "Pflanze" (1947).

Jörg Brinkmann ist Performance-, Video- und Installationskünstler. In seiner Liveperformance lotet er die Möglichkeiten von Field Recordings, gefundenen Soundschnipseln und algorithmischer Programmierung in Max/MSP aus. Daraus entstehen chaotische patterns, stolpernde Rhythmen, Drones und Noise.

Jane Jin Kaisen's most recent work "Halmang" revolves around a group of eight women in their 70s and 80s. It was filmed on the coast of Jeju Island near a lava rock islet that used to serve as a shamanic shrine for the wind goddess Yongdeung Halmang. The women, who have worked and made a living together for most of their lives as Haenyeo sea divers, used to depart together for the sea from this very location. The title Halmang refers to this spiritual aspect as shamanic goddesses in Jeju are referred to as 'halmang' while also being the Jeju term for 'grandmother' and a respectful form of address for a woman. It was also from this area that the film director's grandmother used to depart for the sea as a Haenyeo sea diver during her lifetime. Halmang was produced by Lior Suliman (also known as Dub Mentor) and is comprised of layers of on-site recordings, looped, interleaved and treated to create an immersive sound experience. It also features The Song of the Haenyeos by Gang Gyung Ja and Song of Haenyeo Preservation Association.

@blatsss says: My fascination with Bhangra, especially the UK hybrid version, has been with me for a while now. It all began when I discovered Bindu on Multitone and the Love 2 Love trilogy on Audiorec.

The rhythmic beats, often driven by the dhol and combined with elements of hip-hop and house, really resonate with me.

Sometimes, it can feel a bit much, but if you take the journey, it all makes sense.
