Tong 桐 | Chicago & New York House Detroit Techno Live Vinyl Set | Tilt Shift Tuesday 22nd Oct 2024

"Oriental by birth and Western by training," Tong 桐 stands out as one of the few Chinese queer house music DJs based in Naarm (Melbourne). He is a torchbearer for Chicago/NY House and Detroit Techno. Born and raised in Northern China, Tong’s passion for dance music ignited in Beijing’s only underground club at the time, “灯笼 Lantern,” where the soulful swing of Chicago House and the gritty grooves of Detroit Techno captivated him.

Now based in Melbourne and having refined his skills under the guidance of top mentors, Tong has showcased his music at renowned events and venues such as Poof Doof and Kiki Bouba Party. He has also founded his own house music event, “Hell Yeah Chicago,” dedicated to preserving and promoting the sounds of Chicago/NY House.

Tong’s sound is both diverse and eclectic. Influenced by legends like Honey Dijon, Derrick Carter, and Danny Tenaglia, he weaves together elements of groove, funk, jazz, vocal, tech, and acid to create his unique house music style.

Tilt Shift sits firmly left of center, a difficult-to-label square peg that unintentionally fails to fit a pigeonhole. Borrowing from the photography term, Tilt Shift refers to two different types of movement, a selective focus with a large depth of field used to control perception. This can be applied to our music policy, tilting the vertical axis resulting in a sharp area of focus without reducing the depth of field. The selective focus that can be achieved by both tilting and shifting movements, It's compelling because the effect is different from that which you may have become accustomed to. This movement is often used to avoid the convergence of parallel lines, or as we have come to think of it, it’s where the lines blur.
