EMBRACING THE DARK SIDE

The title of Leia Azar’s upcoming debut album, Soul Wars, is derived from Leia’s own internal struggle to find herself, to find her voice, to overcome her own insecurities and fears and finally feel 100% comfortable in her own skin.

The album’s title is also an obvious play on the movie Star Wars, and Leia says the classic film has a deeper meaning for her, since her parents named her after the famous Princess from Alderaan. Leia says Soul Wars is also a metaphor for her desire to bring a sense of spirituality and consciousness to her music.   In addition to direct references to things like kundalini, mantras, and chakras, Leia says that when her music is at its best, it allows her to connect with a higher power—a force, if you will. Although most people would have a hard time connecting trap beats with spirituality, Leia views things from a broader perspective. 

  “I need 808,” she says, “that really heavy bass, that vibration hits you in your gut, in your root chakra. And that kind of vibration is ancestral—it’s getting back to the roots of the very first forms of music.” 

Just like you can feel the bass deep in your gut, Leia hopes that through her music, people will be able to connect with a deeper part of themselves. She believes that music can foster a deeper sense of consciousness, and her goal is to use music to help others become more comfortable with who they are, with simply being themselves. 

“Being a human is hard,” says Leia. “Like the Buddha said, ‘life involves suffering.’ So there’s always going to be a struggle, a war going on—that’s part of being human. But if you have faith that there’s greater things at work, that things are happening for a greater purpose—a higher purpose—then that struggle can also fill you with joy.” 

 “Ultimately, I want my music to help people feel empowered through self-love and not be afraid to lay themselves out there and dive deep into those darker places within themselves,” she says. “To not be so afraid of those spaces, but to embrace them.”
