Wow...what an incredible opportunity to host an episode of The Parent Trip. It truly was a journey of music therapy as I explored my youth and family experiences primarily thru the music of my parents' vinyl collection.

The Parent Trip airs the first Wednesday monthly on the global station Vault Radio.  The show is based on a mix concept developed  by DJ MOM. There's no set format. Basically a DJ-- or anybody-- digs thru their parents' music collection and picks tracks that were influential to them on the come up. But the mix or presentation can be creatively scoped out by the individual. Doing this is so therapeutic. There are no rules. It can be all music or you can add commentary as I chose to do. The show can be a sad or happy experience or a mix of many emotions.  

I was fortunate to collaborate here with the wonderful UK DJ MickeyTheMoocher. He was able to expertly interpret my music selections and added some extraordinary music beds of his own choosing to facilitate my spoken parts.

I'm not going to go into the subject matter discussed on the episode in this show description. It's amazing but I feel you are best served hearing it fresh for your own thoughts, reflections and interpretations.

Ask The Artist [with Manuel Darquart]

The first single taken from the album is ‘The Heathers’, a stunning cut of psychedelic, beat-driven electronica. Initially built around the insistent hook of an arpeggiated bell refrain, it evokes shades of beatific 90s electronica and ravey euphoria, falling somewhere between the filtered French touch of Alan Braxe and DJ Falcon, early 90s trance, synth-laden post-punk and the more breakbeat-heavy end of the Future Sound Of London’s oeuvre.

‘The Heathers’ is the perfect taster for Tom’s forthcoming ‘Absolute Melt’ album campaign. The album itself is rich in agrarian textures, organic soul, evocative beatscapes, and 420 flavours, with a nod to the breakbeat hardcore of his roots.

Stoked for the opportunity to play something outside my usual house and techno stuff. I had a choice of either Breaks or Drum & Bass, so I picked Drum & Bass. It's such a pleasure to mix really long dnb intros in and then drop the bass lol. You definitely have to change your mixing game a bit if you've only mixed house. Spikey is known for having started DJing back in the mid 80's, playing at pubs and house parties. In the early days of Rave he then progressed to play the underground scene at clubs such as Sterns and Empire. Having then moved to Brighton he gained residency for 'The English Disco Lovers’. 
He now has his own radio show. Music To Make Your Ears Smile,  on 1BTN and has close ties with the 'Last Night A DJ Saved My Life Charity'. Having a love for delivering sound in its purest form which has lead to a close connection with Funktion One. This has given Spikey the chance to play at Glastonbury many times.
