For episode 17 of our Lockdown Lowdown series we welcome Saskia Holling to discuss her new book "Girlsville: The Story of The Delmonas & Thee Headcoatees" which is out now on Spinout Publications. Saskia talks about the process of writing the book itself along with the history and legacy of both groups and each of the band members. We also find out more about Saskia, her own music with Sally Skull, Lord Rochester and Big Russ Wilkins & Lightnin' Hollings and her fanzine "Heavy Flow" along with encounters with Kim Fowley and the impact of seeing Poison Ivy of The Cramps. We then discuss the prejudices and barriers faced by women in music and the positive effect of the Riot Grrrl movement. The episode is sound-tracked by Saskia's personal selection of her favourite Delmonas and Headcoatees songs, a pick of her own music and some of her influences and most memorable musical moments. Welcome to Episode 51 of Retrosonic Podcast where we welcome former drummer with The Chords Buddy Ascott into the 'studio' on New Year's Eve to look back on 2022. Buddy, now playing with The Fallen Leaves, is currently writing his memoirs and he treats us to a reading from a chapter about an unfortunate incident in Guildford Civic Hall in 1979 involving The Undertones, Jimmy Pursey and some ex-Sex Pistols. He also talks about more recent gig experiences which include drumming with The 79ers as special guests at The Vapors' weekend event at the iconic Portmeirion village, location of the cult TV show The Prisoner. Then we cover The Fallen Leaves shows at the Dublin Castle and their appearance at the Don Craine tribute at the Half Moon Putney, plus we get a sneak preview of a song from the Leaves' next album. We also take a look at some of Retro Man Blog's favourite LPs, Singles, Compilations and Gigs of the year and play a selection of great tracks from The Clash with Ranking Roger, Rhoda Dakar, The Limiñanas, The Prisoners and Michael Head & The Red Elastic Band. Big Boss Man have been fusing 60s R’n’B, Soul, Latin, Funk and Bongo-Hammond-Fuzz since ’98. 

They’ve released four studio albums, and eight 7” singles, and have appeared on countless compilations. The quartet’s explosive live shows are legendary, and they’ve been blasting stages since their earlier days in The Loafers, Skooby and Espadrille, amongst a few others.

As well as playing hundreds of concerts and festivals across the UK, Europe and beyond, Big Boss Man’s music may sound familiar to you, being regularly played on film and television, including Come Dine With Me, Strictly Come Dancing and I Used To Be Famous, and broadcast on BBC Radio, by presenters including Gideon Coe, Cerys Matthews and Craig Charles.  

Not just that, but previous tracks have been used by Nike and The Mighty Boosh, and their official remix of Modfather Paul Weller's single ‘The Bottle’ went straight in to the UK Top 20, and fast became a collector’s item.

‘Bossin’ Around’ has been simmering for some time! Ten years since their last studio album, and four 7” singles in-between, these twelve tracks are ready to unleash.

With guests providing trumpet, flute, saxophones and trombones, Big Boss Man have fused a mix of  Soul-fuelled 60s R’n’B, Hammond Jazz, Latin and Mod Funk, and have almost gone back to their roots too!

Big Boss Man continue to make what the people call ‘proper’ music.
