Bside Incoming: Athlete Whippet

This time we invite an exciting Berlin based duo behind the Bside turntables to walk us through some of their most treasured records. With two releases on Toy Tonics, a record under past guests Rhythm Section, as well as showcasing music from artists such as Ross From Friends, Baltra and Seb Wildblood on their own Squareglass imprint, we are certainly excited to bring you an episode from such impeccable selectors: Athlete Whippet.

The duo met at London’s Goldsmiths, with a passion for music bringing them together. One now works at !K7, the other developing live sets for the likes of Priya Ragu, Berwyn, and Lapsley; their spare time is spent crafting incredible music with a live bass, guitar, piano, and some hardware synths and samples.

Their Bside selections pay tribute to their influences and musical connections; records on Tartelet, Rhythm Section and Toy Tonics, incredible artists like Max Graef, Paula Tape, Jitwam, and COEO all making the cut. Expect a reflection of their own artistic output which always straddles the line between dancefloor fun and soothing sounds.

I first encountered @philspank on a mountaintop in Santa Barbara, slapping the crowd with four-on-the-floor smackers. I've been following closely ever since through the @spacemilkmusic mix series, as well as his own Spank's Danks, where I've particularly been digging his selections.

In the Bay Area in particular, where Phil is based, he has been active in the scene through new party endeavor Room 4 Improvement, and through Space Milk parties, like their epic anniversary at CTRL Disco (although that is in Ventura).

With these parties still fresh, it seems there couldn't have been a better time to catch up with Phil. And what's more, but with an all vinyl mix of deep cut disco gems straight from his collection.

Fan de sa série de mix 90’s US/UK House « stacey's tracks », découverte un peu par hasard dans les méandres de Sound/Mix-cloud, j’avais proposé à François, à l’époque Radio Campus, d’enregistrer un mix pour l’émission. C’est finalement sur Comala que ça se concrétise.

Comme certains de ses pairs DJs, François vient d’un background Hiphop, découvre dans la continuité le disco et le funk pour ensuite verser, il y a quelques années, du côté de la House, dont il accumule depuis les disques. Son mix est à prendre comme une « carte de visite » de ses divers univers : de la US Garage House, UK, Deep House Italienne, des dubs, des « vocal mix », de l’obscure, des classiques…
