London’s Tehbis and Touchy Subject land on Astrophonica with Magnet For Your Mind, a joint EP that represents the yin and yang of their creativity. Produced without overthinking, the EP’s six tracks are split into distinct halves: one built for the dancefloor, the other for the headphones. “We use a multitude of platforms to write our music,” says the pair, who have made quiet moves over the past five years with releases on Brownswood Recordings, Numbers, and Wot Not. “Digital production, live instrumentation, samples, live vocals. Hopefully the result is music that people can relate to and vibe off.”

A note from Utile Creative on the artwork concept and process:

"The artwork begun with the concept of positive and negative ends of a magnet. After the drawing had been finalised, we scanned it in to allow us to artwork appropriately for the Risograph printing process. For those who don't know, risograph printing is similar to screen printing in the sense that it prints one spot colour at a time through a mesh screen. What's different is that its fully automated, bar the print settings you can apply from the PC.

The machine we have at UTILE is an RP3700 and we chose to keep the colours relevant to the magnet concept by choosing Bright Red and Medium Blue. The halftone settings were adjusted to allow a more solid print, which is why when you look closely you will notice the design is built up of small dots. Once we were happy with the alignment of the two colour layers, which can often be very misaligned, we rescanned the best printed artwork ready for mass printing and the digital artwork." - Utile Creative

This month, we catch up with Dark Entries founder Josh Cheon to discuss the ‘80s sounds surrounding the label, the challenges of working on reissue projects and Patrick Cowley.

Through its near 10-year history, Dark Entries has established itself as a buy-on-sight imprint for lovers of dark-edged, brooding or idiosyncratic sounds that were born during or take influence from the ‘80s. The imprint has developed a level of trust few labels manage to accomplish on such a wide scale in under a decade, without compromising on an ethos of delivering releases from influential artists that exist on the outskirts of electronic music.
