Wilson Simonal - Nem Vem Que Nao Tem:

An instant and super catchy samba-MPB hit made famous through by its inclusion in Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund’s ‘City Of God’. This is a firm Simonal favourite here at Mr Bongo HQ.

Simonal was a hugely successful singer in the 1960’s and early 70’s; one of the most popular artists in Brazil infact.

‘Nem Vem Que Nao Tem’ was previously released on 7” by Odeon in France and Spain, and appears on his ‘Alegria, Alegria !!!’ LP on Odeon Brazil, released in 1967

Trio Mocoto - Nao Adianta:

Trio Mocoto were one of Jorge Ben Jr’s main backing bands and highly influential to his sound. They recorded with him on the seminal ‘Força Bruta’, ‘Negro É Lindo’ and ‘Tábua de Esmeralda’ LP’s.

Nao Adianta first appeared on Trio Mocoto’s self-titled 1977 Arlequim LP. It was subsequently released on 7” in Spain, Portugal and Italy (and we are assuming France too).

Waltel Branco, born in Paranaguá on November 22nd, 1929, is a teacher, composer and Brazilian conductor with more than 20 albums to his name. Branco has arranged or participated in some way in approximately 1,000 Brazilian records.

This album was recorded in the summer of 1965 and originally released in 1975 on the Brazilian label Discos CBS.

Waltel Branco, known as the uncle of psychedelic funk, is the guitarist on a lot of classic early- and mid-sixties bossa albums with outfits including Wilson Das Neves, Eumir Deodato and Ed Lincoln amongst others. He was instrumental in the recording of the classic and highly prized Mancini Tamem e Samba album that is available on the What Music label.

The legendary trio are one of the most well-known and most loved Brazilian exports, still regularly touring, including dates worldwide.

Most prolific during their time signed to Milestone, where they released 10 LP’s between 1979 and 1988.

Osmar Milito e Quarteto Forma - America Latina

‘America Latina’ is taken from the soundtrack to the Rede Globo soap opera "Selva De Pedra”, released on Som Livre in 1972. A cheerful, upbeat MPB song with a killer chorus drop.

Milito began his career in 1964 artists as Nara Leão, Maria Bethania, Vinicius de Morais, Gilberto Gil, Jorge Ben and Elis Regina amongst others. He worked in the USA with Chico Buarque and Sergio Mendes for several years in the 70’s, also appearing alongside artists including Liza Minelli, Mark Murphy, Spanky Wilson and Sammy Davis Jr.

As sampled on Madvillain ft. M.E.D 'Raid', and featured in the Floating Points  and Fourtet Plastic People mix!

Rita Lee & Tutti Frutti - Agora e Moda

Agora e moda is a psychedelic, disco-boogie-groove monster, brought to our attention by Greg Caz and Sean Marquand aka Brazilian Beats Brooklyn. Originally released on her Babilônia LP on Som Livre in 1978.

Rita Lee was lead singer of Os Mutantes and a hugely important figure in the Tropicalia movement. She remains one of the biggest personalities in Brazil, much loved both in and out of the music world.

Perhaps not the most well known artist internationally, but within Brazil she is as well known as, if not more so, the likes and of Ben and Simonal.

Pete Dunaway - Supermarket

‘Supermarket’ is a Rare Groove/AOR masterpiece; killer baseline, drums and heavily string laden with a perfectly delivered English vocal!

A lovely oddity. Pete Dunaway, real name Otavio Cardosa was a singer, composer, arranger and multi instrumentalist from Sao Paulo, who spent the majority of his time composing for TV themes and library instrumentals.

A collection of covers of master Brazilian musician and writer Jorge Ben. With such classics under his belt as Mas Que Nada, covered by the likes of Sergio Mendes, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and Al Jarreau, and the song Taj Mahal which was the source of Rod Stewart’s Do You Think I’m Sexy?, Ben is a huge force in Brazilian popular music.

Often described as the James Brown of Brazilian music due to his prolific output, he is the most sampled Brazilian artist ever with people from the Black Eyed Peas to DJ Marky lifting elements off his tracks. His song catalogue has also been covered by some of the finest bands in Brazil.

This selection represents a more dance-floor orientated outing including mega rarities for the collecting fiends like Cosa Nostra by Os Mutreteiros Grilados and tracks that even Ben himself never got around to singing like Rei Do Maracatu's Cyro Aguiar.
