We're back with our fourth release. Called Sweet Bitter Love, it's a four track EP of manic sample-driven house from Keita Sano, a Japanese producer who's been on a roll lately with releases for like-minded imprints Discos Capablanca, Mister Saturday Night, and Strictly Groove Recordings.

Sweet Bitter Love kicks off with the tripped-out flair of "Once I Found a Diamond." It's an uplifiting bongo-led cut with dubby melodics that sound like the kind of thing Sleeping Bag Records would have put out in the early '80s. Jacques Renault provides a leaner peak-time version — complete with hard-hitting snares and growling bass — via his "Once I Found a Diamond (Jacques Renault Trouble Funk Remix)."

Things take a turn for the delightfully weird on the EP's namesake "Sweet Bitter Love." Starting like a straightforward house cut, it explodes into a psychedelic collage of spaghetti western guitars, tribal calls, displaced jazz fills, and other forms of cleverly sampled soundtrack exotica. The release wraps up with yet another curveball on "Bouzouk." Here Sano lays out a subwoofer-knocking NY garage house rhythm that takes a left turn with frenzied bouzouki playing charting arpeggios through a haze of echoing foreign voices.

Taken as a whole, Sweet Bitter Love is that rare idiosyncratic bomb of an EP that will keep your dancers moving and your trainspotters guessing — In other words, it's Spring Theory through and through.

After the major success of their debut "Silt" album, Wonderwheel Recordings have enlisted the help of some of our favorite producers from across the electronic spectrum to take a crack at the unique East African Retro Pop of Sudanese American chanteuse Alsarah and her band the Nubatones. 

Argentinian laptop mystic Chancha Via Circuito brings "Fugu" into the rainforest with his deep and folkloric take on the tune, while Captain Planet brings "Wad Alnuba" into deep, late night slo-mo Disco Dabke territory. Africa is represented on "Silt Remixed" by both Central African Republic's Boddhi Satva and Cape Verdean/Angolan producer DJeff, who both properly represent the wildly popular Deep House scene in the motherland with their refixes. Sorceress producer Issac Aesilli takes "Bilal Al Dahab" into melancholy, abstract electronic territory while KCRW DJ and LA fixture Jeremy Sole gives a tasteful, classy beat driven remix of "Habibi Taal" with help from Clap! Clap! and Beats Antique. Lastly, Wonderwheel label boss Nickodemus turns "Rennat" into a hypnotic, driving four to the floor filler, while labelmate The Spy From Cairo goes straight for the jugular with his dubby dancehall version of "Nouba Noutou"


Alsarah, is a Sudanese born singer, songwriter and ethnomusicologist. Born in the capital city of Khartoum, where she spent the first 8 years of her life, she relocated to Taez, Yemen with her family to escape the ever stifling regime in her native country. She abruptly moved to the US in 1994, when a brief civil war broke out in Yemen. Now residing in Brooklyn, NY, she is a self-proclaimed practitioner of East-African retro-pop. Working on various projects, she most recently has been working with The Nile Project and was featured on their debut release, Aswan (named 1 of the Top 5 “Must Hear” international albums by NPR). She has also collaborated with French producer Débruit on the album Aljwal, released this past November via Soundway Records UK.

Amon Tobin occupies a peculiar position in the dance music firmament – a point where the gravitational forces of IDM, EDM, D’n’B and rather more hipster-friendly bass music balance one another out. He’s got every bit the production finesse, and often the weirdness, of WARP luminaries, he can also make some very deep and dark basement-friendly tunes – yet he is something of a rave superstar in the USA, and for The Six Rhythms EP he’s on Dutch loudness-warriors Noisia’s label Division. His Two Fingers guise was originally created for tracks with UK MC Sway, but it’s now an instrumental project. We won’t lie, the other tracks on this EP slide a bit far into stadium rave territory for us, but this one – a healthy dose of body-rocking warehouse electro – does the business and then some. It’s out on 22nd June – you can preorder on the Division site or iTunes.
