Spring Theory is proud to announce its latest release, an LP from San Francisco-based experimental producer and label alumni Aria Rostami. Titled Agnys, it's an intensely personal and introspective reflection on friendship, loss and rebirth in our hyper-connected society. A rumination on a collaborative project started with Rostami's now deceased production partner, roommate, and friend Shawn Dickerson, it utilizes a melodic and ambient techno sound palette to take the listener on a journey that touches on the uncanny permanence that information technology lends to the tragic fragility of the human experience.

Mirroring the time distortion of the information age, and how new and old exist simultaneously on the internet, Agnys is a record that unfolds in reverse. The deep and minimalistic b-sides, "White-White," "Soroban" and "Beghilos" guide the aesthetic experience. Unified by an emotion of retrospective nostalgia, they were all created by editing and contorting aspects from a single recording made from Dickerson's piano — a dusty and detuned standup made sometime before The Great Depression that now sits in Rostami's bedroom. "This plays with both the idea of sameness (something old, something that's been done, something bland) and newness (something re-contextualized)," explains Rostami.

By contrast, the warm embrace of "Clepsydra," the symphonic dancefloor grandeur of "Seven-Segments," and sharp punchiness of "A Square Tablet Strewn With Dust" reveal Rostami's own take on the sonic structure of the B-sides. "The A-sides are a reinterpretation of the world made by the B-sides much like the B-sides are a reinterpretation of Shawn's interests and ideas. In this way, the listener works backwards to the source."

"The internet became a key player in our relationship. The web dissolved old walls of discovery and opened itself up through search terms and piracy. We were discovering electronic music we couldn't even conceive of." says Rostami. "For Agnys, I took ideas that are new, ideas that are old, and ideas that are just old enough to be recycled again and focused on certain points that I thought Shawn and I could have explored more if we had had the time."

Simply put, Agnys is a beautiful record from one of San Francisco's most talented producers. We're excited to release it, and we're very excited for you to hear it for yourself.

About Pops Staples
Roebuck "Pops" Staples was an American gospel and R&B musician. A "pivotal figure in gospel in the 1960s and 1970s, he was an accomplished songwriter, guitarist and singer. He was the patriarch and member of singing group The Staple Singers, which included his son Pervis and daughters Mavis, Yvonne, and Cleotha. Pops was born near Winona, Mississippi, the youngest of 14 children. He grew up on a cotton plantation near Drew, Mississippi. From his earliest years he heard, and began to play with, local blues guitarists such as Charlie Patton Robert Johnson, and Son House.  He dropped out of school after the eighth grade, then sang with a gospel group before marrying and moving to Chicago in 1935.  In 1948, Robs and his wife Oceola Staples formed The Staple Singers to sing as a gospel group in local churches, with their children. The Staple Singers first recorded in the early 1950s for United and then the larger Vee-Jay Records, with songs including 1955's "This May Be the Last Time" .  In the 1960s the Staple Singers moved to Riverside Records, Epic Records, and later Stax Records and began recording protest, inspirational and contemporary music, reflecting the civil rights and anti-war movements of the time.
A further move in the late 60s, the family extending their range still further with aspirational soul material such as Respect Yourself, which won them a gold disc; the hypnotic chant I'll Take You There; and the million-selling If You're Ready (Come Go With Me). Staples also recorded an instrumental blues album, Jammed Together, with fellow guitarists Albert King and Steve Cropper. There were those who regarded these progressive accommodations to the secular music market as betrayals of the traditions the family were supposed to represent. To such accusations Staples succinctly replied, "Ain't nobody want to go to heaven more than me, but we got to live down here too."
The Staples Singers worked less after Mavis left to pursue a solo career, but in the 90s "Pops" Staples, as he now billed himself, enjoyed a spell of international success away from the family setting, appearing at blues festivals - though steadfastly refusing to sing the blues - and recording the well-received albums Peace to the Neighborhood and Father Father in collaboration with admirers such as Ry Cooder and Bonnie Raitt.

World BEAThoven Project:

On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of nature enthusiast, humanist, visionary and composition genius Ludwig van Beethoven, an international network under the direction and idea of ​​cultural manager Darius Darek (Taxi MunDJal MusiX) produced an extraordinary album: Twenty melodies from Beethoven's works were recorded on non-European musical instruments by musicians based in the Cologne-Bonn region. This sample databank was created under the direction of Hans Zimmer's sample library developer Felix Ohlert and was then used by music producers worldwide as the basis for new tracks of electronic music.
The album now being released will be presented at festivals and in clubs and rearranged for a 35-piece brass orchestra (Youth Brass Band NRW).

As Darius Darek's academic background is geography, he has implemented sustainable, degrowth and minimalism based, fair, green, common-good-oriented and alternative ways of life into this music project. A transdisciplinary designed artivism towards a socio-ecological transformation: 

- to promote „cultural diversity“ the project is a collaboration with musicians of diverse music cultures to record a sample databank.

- to promote „cultural heritage“ the project aims to upcycle & remix almost forgotten music by worldwide electronic music producers.

- to promote „creative commons“ the sample databank and the remixes can be used and listened to for free.

- to promote „socio-ecological projects“ the remixes are presented at green, transformational or zero waste festivals, at intergenerational bicycle rides or in „freeboxes“ (https://tinyurl.com/freeboxvideo).

- to include „citizen participation“ a random local youth involvement and a worldwide production contest (in cooperation with Arts Council England) were carried out: www.globallocal.co.uk/remixspace/

- the project thus supports some of the sustainable development goals (SDGs): reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, quality education, gender equality and climate action.
