This valentines day and for the rest of your days, love yourself, value yourself, and be true to yourself. Put your mental health first above everything -- above expectations, above societal ideas and way of life drilled into your brain. 

To me, loving oneself means doing the things you love regardless of outside noises. Valuing oneself means deciding what’s good for you and what feels good to you. And being true to oneself means living life the way you want to.

People might criticise you for doing things differently. People might not like it, but know that it’s purely because they do not understand. Do they also refuse to understand? Oftentimes, yes because people don’t like to be told otherwise. There’s this kind of generated “life template 101” which is seemingly widely-accepted, especially by the generations who came before me. In it you’ll find the order in which one’s life “must” be lived. 

To quickly define the so-called “life template 101”, it’s a cycle that begins with birth, education, employment, marriage, parenthood, old age, death. Honestly, that life template doesn’t sound too bad. But surely there are other templates available, right? Other ways to live life. However, there’s this belief that we “must” all use that one template. Do people know it doesn’t cost anything to use a different template? Or that it isn’t a crime to do so?

In any case, criticisms are inevitable so let people do what they do best -- criticising what’s different or unconventional or simply something they didn’t expect. Let them because your present life and happiness don’t and don’t have to depend on them or on old-fashioned reasonings. You’re not alive or still breathing because of either. You are because you were brave enough not to give up after all the hardships and breakdowns. We could’ve all just jumped off a building or something at some point but we chose not to. We chose to push through because although there are a lot of bad, we learn that there are also a lot of good.

Speaking of criticisms... we’re actually all a bit too hard on each other at times, especially women-women, friend-friend, family-family, etc. We’re nicer to men than to women. We’re nicer to our acquaintances than to our friends. We’re nicer to strangers than to our family. How fucked up is that? Women let a lot of things slide when it’s something that men do (i.e. double standards). Some even praise men for debauchery while they shame women for the same thing (Yes, I am fervently rolling my eyes). Friends make more time for acquaintances than friends they’ve had for years. Families constantly pressure the youth to do better miraculously on their own, to take on responsibilities they didn’t ask for, to marry and have kids (Side note: as if women were only put into this world to marry, have kids and serve men (Yes, I am fervently rolling my eyes again)). That side note is a topic for another day because I am seriously fed up with how some people think women “should” be.

Likewise, we’re actually all hard on ourselves sometimes, too. Do you know that gets you pregnant? Not biologically pregnant, but you somehow give birth to envy, jealousy and evil, and then you start treating people like shit. We’re all unique and amazing in our own ways. I sincerely mean that. So seriously, this Valentine's day and for the rest of your days, love yourself, value yourself, and be true to yourself. Or let’s all at least try. One day at a time. Start off by saying something nice to yourself each day. Happy Valentine's day! Spread the love and stay safe.
