Sad nigga beats 

23# blood moon

Story time. When I was a kid my cousin Myron got this goosebumps video game for the PC. We’d play it together trying to figure out our way through extremely perilous (now incredibly cheesy) odds. There was one part that stuck out to me though, there was this one sequence where you had to run through this maze away from a werewolf who was chasing you and if you made a wrong turn he would tear you apart. You didn’t necessarily see it happen but at the game over screen it was strongly implied. 

It really struck me evidently as that night would be the first of a recurring nightmare that would continue monthly over the next 10 years.

I was obsessed with horror and the macabre from a young age. Parents and teachers were concerned to some degree, but my mom would just write it off as my temperament or something like that. I Liked what I liked, so I was used to consuming scary movies and the stuff on TV like goosebumps and the crypt keeper. So I’m not sure why this particular horror stuck with me so viscerally. 

Scene - I wake up in the dead of night. Usually midnight or something. I get dressed and go downstairs to my patio doors and notice the moon is blood red casting an eerie red light over everything so there is only red or deep shadows. Something is telling me to go outside - so I do. It is warm and oddly welcoming. I look up and marvel at the grandeur of the moon. Lost in it for a moment, I suddenly get the feeling I am not alone. I look back down and notice a lone wolf.

There is an ominous aura about it as it stares at me, eyes fixed but body calm. I make a motion to move and I noice the hackles on its neck go up, so I freeze. I notice now we are not alone as several more wolves arrive on in my backyard. The tension is palpable and I begin to back away slowly, surveying my surroundings. I am surrounded but just maybe I can get back inside without incident. 

As I slowly pace backwards toward my door the wolves follow in turn and I notice they grow in number as several more emerge from the bushes. I make it to the door and grab the handle. Locked.

Fuck.

I look back at the main wolf who initially greeted me for this midnight rendezvous. It looks back at me intensely as if to say “Run”.

So I do. I make a break for it and start running. They are on my heels. By the time I’ve noticed they’ve been corralling me into a single direction straight into the woods, it is too late. 

I’m deep in the shit now, the light of the moon no longer guiding me and the wolves not as I easy to spot amongst the shadows the trees cast. I reach a clearing in the trees and it appears that I am alone. 

As I pause to consider my options, I hear the leaves rustle around me. They have surrounded me. I can feel it but I can’t see them. 

There is a moment of dead silence. A pregnant pause. A lone wolf wanders out from the trees and stares at me mournfully. As if to say it is sorry for what is about to happen. And in that instant they are upon me. Teeth gnashing and growling. They tear at my arms and legs, ripping into my skin and I am helpless to fight them. A wolf tears into my abdomen and begins to pull out what looks like intestines as a quiet begins to overcome me. A deafening silence as the world starts to fade. A wolf stands over me, staring deep into my eyes for a final time before it lunges at my face.

I wake up with a shout. I’ve had this dream monthly since I was 8 years old. It’s recurred in almost the same exact way since then but its happened so often that I have moments of lucidity. I try to reason with the wolves occasionally. 

“Oh it’s that time of the month again? Do we really gotta do this? What’s your beef with me man?”

“You know I can just go back inside and we can pretend like this didn’t happen you know…”

No avail. Same results every time. 

I would tell my friends and family about this dream and they’d react predictably. “Damn man thats crazy”. “Thomas what the hell is wrong with you haha”.
