COLD EXPRESSIONS: Stalker invites Sofay [24.02.2023]

When I first discovered Donato Dozzy’s early records around 2006, I was immediately captured by the warm and hypnotic feel of his music. From that moment on, I’ve been a big fan of Dozzy’s work, over the years, collecting more and more of his music - from the solo projects and remixes to his well-known collaborations with other great artists. At some point the idea occurred to me: why not paying homage to this great artist in form of a tribute mix? It took me quite a while to bring the idea into reality, but now here it is. During the process of selecting the tracks for the mix, I got the feeling I wanted to create something more geared toward home listening or a walk around the city with headphones. For this reason, I slowed things down a bit and kept the whole mix under 120 bpm.

Emotional Response returns to Dusseldorf with a compilation of the music emanating out of the Diskant label over some 7EPs between 2009-2014. Featuring the productions of The Durian Brothers, Harmonious Thelonious and Don’t DJ, their unique polyrhythmic percussive sound of the label is highlighted across this special double album.

Releasing this collection of works of the Diskant label is special as it was the discovery of Disk01 on the wall of Honest Jons store back in 2009 that was one of the prime influences in the creation of Emotional Response. Obscure, rhythmic music like no other was matched in striking artwork, presented on screen-printed sleeves,that caught the imagination. 

Since then a lot has become known about Dusseldorf’s music scene. DJs, artists and labels like Musiccargo, Wolf Müller, Lena Wilikens, Tolouse Low-Trax, Themes From Great Cities, Vladimir Ivkovic, Kunstopf, B.A.R and more have all deservedly reached out beyond the original meeting and melting pot that is the Salon Des Amateurs to become names to watch.  With so much interest centred on this cultural hive, it is only right that the Diskant collective of musicians is now viewed and their music appraised for how ground breaking and influential it has been on the Cities unique musical perspective.

Born out of the early years of the Salon (check online for suitable live clips), the label was set up as a vehicle for the music and member’s music of The Durian Brothers. Florian Meyer (Don’t DJ), Marc Matter and Stefan Schwander (Harmonious Thelonious) came together from their own music backgrounds to explore a new experimental polyrhythmic para-funk via  distorted electronics. Using specially prepared turntables, hypnotic rhythmic patterns, noise and sequencing they have created a dense and fuzzy excess that over four sides of vinyl is here now presented as a retrospective, but not an end, to highlight their unique sound.

Captured Tracks will release '47100', a new 4-track EP from Italian composer and drummer Matteo Vallicelli, on June 16th. After the release of his debut album Primo in February, Vallicelli continues his personal journey through the "electric jungle" -- 47100 was written and recorded in Forlì, Italy, his hometown, and is a collaborative effort with Giuseppe Coluccelli, guitar player of the hardcore band Raein.

I've always used Pro Tools, and after using Logic for the first time to do everything, including mix, I've decided I really don't like the workflow of Logic at all. It's just all over the place. BUT it's great for creating. Anyways. Here's something I made for my birthday, 5 days after the fact.

Ft. the wise words of Nicole Austin, whom I've only had the fortune of meeting and hanging out with once, but her words meant so much to me that I was compelled to record them on the spot. Plus she bought me jerk chicken platter at 1 AM. Someone with that kind of power deserves to be immortalized in music

"At this time of year in Glasgow the nights get darker, it gets colder and it gets harder. You might think that is the case for any city transitioning into winter but there’s something about Glasgow that when this transition happens it feels like a real punch in the stomach. So while picking out records I’ve tried to concoct something of an antidote to this annual feeling. It moves from September into October and November into December with the pains/pleasures I have over those months. It’s turned out quite personal, perhaps more than I had originally intended but I like the vulnerability in it."
