Whoever you are, and no matter what your musical preference, there is a good chance you have danced to a Kieran Hebden beat before now. The London man best known as Four Tet has done everything in his career, from glistening indie-licked electronica albums to pumping bass and garage mixes for Fabric via collaborations with Steve Reid and Burial, shows on NTS and plenty of club ready projects on his own Text label. We have long been a fan, and recently he played for us at Dekmantel Festival. 

The results were recorded and we present them to you here as our latest podcast. As you would expect, it is hard to put into words what the man aims for, and achieves, across the course of two hours, but suffice it to say it will surely be the most adventurous mix you hear for a while. From niche Indian music to classic house, dirty STL cuts to synthetic tech and Latin tinged funk, he stitches together a wild ride full of smooth left turns and dazzling curveballs that will make you want to loosen every limb in your body and shake till you drop. We already have done once back in early August, and now we surely will do again and again and again.

Taking the release-portfolio into account, Rampa built over the last years on Keinemusik, him adding a new EP to the labels catalogue is worth every credit of trust. And this very “Trust” EP is living up to that not only by its name. It certainly offers value for money, considering KM-releases have mostly been two-trackers. There are four cuts on this one, each one following a different approach, making it also a hella versatile record.

It opens with the titeltrack, the floor-mantra within this bunch. A ruminant groove, backed by lifting and dropping notes, launching a catchy synth-figure and adding up synth-layers until all tension drops into a break that’s as curative as a talk therapy. A track that, out of unshakable serenity, unleashes an irresistible energy.

The following “Entropie” comes closest to what could be considered a Rampa classic. Percussive loops that are scooped up with even more banging and clanking – check. Lurking synthbass in the back – check. Vocalsamples with tribal descent – double check. Generally, you’ll find a whole lot of folklore in this rhythm rich affair, that continuously is jazzing up to highest ecstasy levels.

The flipside opens with “Defiled”, led by a prominent synthline, that’s going through various filter highs and lows and gets bludgeoned by some vigorously swung claps. Raw, naked floor material lacking any flourish, that seems to even fire up a jackhammer during the break.

“Headsup” is concluding this set. Triggering the smell of watered sidewalks, lit-up only by flickering neon light, immersed in the depths of delay, this latenight-story finds some redemption and warmth within the glow of its soulful vocal samples.

Formerly known as Bwana, Toronto producer Nathan Micay has shown he means business under his birth name, releasing on Whities, ESP Institute and his own imprint, Schvitz Edits. Following impressive reworks and his fantasy narrative-inspired debut album, ‘Blue Spring’, which came out on LuckyMe last year, Micay has turned his attention to Rinse France resident Malcolm’s ‘Badman’, giving it a ‘I’ll Have What I’m Having’ breakbeat spin. “Snare rolls and syncopation are the name of the game with this remix,” Nathan Micay says. “Tried to make it as shifty as possible. Find your own beat amongst it all.”

Discovered among the storied Roy Ayers ‘Virgin Ubiquity’ studio session tapes, BBE Music presents ‘Reaching The Highest Pleasure’, a previously unreleased gem capturing Ayers and his band at their smooth and soulful best.

Lovingly remastered by Optimum mastering in Bristol, this lost masterpiece recorded in June 1977 features a sumptuous bass-line and ultra-tight groove, over which Roy’s extended vibraphone solo simply soars.

For reasons lost to the mists of time, ‘Reaching The Highest Pleasure’ was never included on either volume of BBE’s ‘Virgin Ubiquity’ albums, however eagle-eared music fans may remember a slightly different version being championed by Gilles Peterson around a decade ago.

As we all know, pleasure is most rewarding when it’s shared, no matter how long it takes, so enjoy this previously unpublished page of musical history from the Godfather of neo soul himself, Mr Roy Ayers.

Danny Daze returns to his own Omnidisc imprint for the Propaganda & Manipulation EP. Following the pounding electro of 2019’s Pulmotor EP with DeFeKT and a solo EP of malfunctioning techno for Moustache Records, the Miami don returns with four rough, gritty and grounded tracks, two of which feature Brazillian producer and Omnidisc affiliate RHR.

Danny has been collaborating with RHR since 2015 when he first received his demos from the São Paulo favelas. Since then Danny has taken RHR under his wing, featuring the talented producer on Omnidisc showcases and releasing the collaborative Ginga EP in 2016 plus RHR’s solo debut 12” last year on Omnidisc. RHR is once again back on Omnidisc, assisting Danny with some of his most explorative productions yet.
Tough, hip-hop infected ‘Planet’, which closes out the EP with crunchy 808 kicks and a powerfully throbbing low end.

Nkem Njoku & Ozzobia Sound’s one and only album, Ozobia Special, is an early 80s Igbo Highlife masterpiece, drawing on Ghana Highlife as well as traditional Ogene 6/8 bell tempos.

Nkem Njoku’s only album as leader, this LP epitomizes the feel-good, gospel-tinged party atmosphere of Igbo Highlife, with John Kante’s soukous guitar scales interweaving the sharp sax/ trumpet line-up, which includes the legendary Ray Stephen Oche, whose two scarce albums with his band Matumbo are big afro-jazz collectors’ items, reissued several times over the years.

Percussion section includes the prolific Smart ‘Friday Pozo’ Thompson, whose session credits read like a ‘who’s who’ of contemporary West African music and include many gigs on Tabansi artists’ albums.
The razor-sharp production sound, as so often on the best Tabansi Highlife and boogie sessions, is down to multi-keyboardist Jake Sollo.

BBE Music presents the sixth release in its acclaimed J Jazz Masterclass Series: ‘Stop Over’ by Hideto Sasaki – Toshiyuki Sekine Quartet +1. Released at the height of the electric fusion era, ‘Stop Over’ is an all-acoustic hard bop killer, sounding like the Jazz Messengers on speed. When it was originally issued on the private Smile label in 1976, only 100 copies were pressed, making ‘Stop Over’ one of the most sought after and rare LPs in the J Jazz canon.

Trumpeter Hideto Sasaki tears it up as if he’s Kenny Dorham on a classic late 50s Blue Note session. He also provides the breakneck title track to the album, the one stunning original that sits next to solid covers including Bobby Hutcherson’s modal classic ‘Little B’s Poem’ and Denny Zeitlin’s ‘Carole’s Garden’. Pianist Toshiyuki Sekine is also on top form with his deft touch and fluid keyboard runs, playing Horace Silver to Sasaki’s Dorham. If you dig that late 50s/early 60s breathless hard bop sound, you’ll love this.

Licensed and released with the approval of Toshiyuki Sekine himself, ‘Stop Over’ will be available for download and streaming, as a CD and double vinyl LP, the first vinyl reissue of this amazing album since originally slipping out to family and friends in 1976. With a deluxe packaging and translated sleeve notes, there will also be new notes and an interview with Toshiyuki Sekine.
