Having previously released on Intergraded, Gottwax, and Earful of Wax - production and DJ duo EM + STAV launched their own imprint, JoyLift, earlier this year. Originally starting as an event series, the pair launched the label arm with their own EP, 'Endless', drawing from Bristol's storied bass mutations as a springboard for their own modernist take on dance music and featured a remix from Forest Drive West. 

Alongside their production output, EM + STAV are firmly committed to helping bring through the next generation of artists and give them the opportunity and platform to hone their skills via their independent projects such as Mix Nights and Restless Nights. Their UK-centric DJ sets that tap into the old and new sounds of UK bass and UK techno have seen them play at storied events and festivals such as Field Manuevers, Gottwood, Love International, Paloma, Headroom and Livity Sound showcase.

For our first FM mix of the year, we've enlisted two Oxford and Bristol local legends; @em-williams and @stav_music. 

Em Williams formed her love for dance music through early-morning raves and late-night convoys to London in the company of Craig Richards and Ricardo Villalobos at Fabric, she has built her name from the grassroots. 
For over 14 years she’s been at the helm of Simple, an Oxford clubbing institution that has welcomed a definitive who’s who of DJ royalty; Lena Willikens, Midland, DJ Stingray, Hunee, Ben UFO, Young Marco...the list goes on and on. 

As well as hosting a monthly show on NOODS radio, the pair have found themselves immersed in Bristol's music culture. Em is one of the mentors behind Mix Nights, a women only DJ course which she heads up with selectors Daisy Moon and Danielle. Stav, both Williams’ partner behind the decks and partner in real, actual human life, has been pretty busy himself, too. As well as being part of the Simple fold, he runs the Restless Nights clubnight with pal Beattie, they've welcomed the likes of Saoirse, Telfort, 100hz, Flørist, Jane Fitz and Carl H, and as a DJ Stav leans toward the tectonic rhythms of Batu, Donato Dozzy and Peverelist. 

Recorded in Bristol last week, FM038 is a 75-minute interstellar trip into granulated techno, analogue electro, piercing breakbeat and kick drums that’ll shake the foundations of your flat. Dive in.

Em’s DJ career began over a decade ago at Simple, the city’s most established club night. Nourished by regular late night commutes to Fabric, she quickly earned a residency with Simple as they racked up bookings from every crevice of DJ royalty, and she’s been holding it down ever since. Rather than give up that residency upon moving to Bristol, though, she picked up an additional residency at Motion - one of the most esteemed clubs in the UK. Em also co-runs Bristol’s Mix Nights project alongside selectors Daisy Moon and Danielle, mentoring women through DJ workshops and performances in a safe and welcoming environment.

Meanwhile Stav has carved his own path, simultaneously acquiring a collection of obscurities by virtue of his hunger for the unknown. After joining the Simple fold in 2012, it wasn’t long before he’d start his own event series over in Bristol with pal Beattie. The aptly-titled Restless Nights project unites DJs like Saoirse, Jane Fitz, Carl H, 100hz, Truly Madly, S.O.N.S, Dj October, Flørist, and Telfort to name a few, with low-slung beats; whispers of the city’s dub history, and traces of the insuppressible party flex.

Em & Stav have been annual fixtures at the intimate UK festival Field Maneuvers, as well as playing alongside DJRum, Overmono, Mor Elian, Or:la, and every other DJ legend that’s graced Simple’s dark back room. As for the coming months, Em & Stav face a year of fresh line ups, eclectic events at home; and festivals abroad, bringing their eclectic blend of freaky breaks, techno rollers and much more to dance floors across Europe. Oxford's well established and highly praised club night Simple has formed an integral part of the underground music scene over the past decade here in the UK. This November we welcome two of their finest residents, Em Williams & Stav - who join us for one night only down in Undertone.

Year after year these guys deliver hands down some of the best sets we have witnessed at Gottwood Festival. We've been extremely eager to bring them over to Cardiff and look forward to hearing their spin on UKG, electro, techno and everything in-between.

An all-vinyl DJ and photographer based in Brooklyn, Andy was the founding resident of the Ostbahnhof parties in New York and Los Angeles, and has held NYC residencies at High+Tight, Bossa Nova Civic Club, and The Gateway. Honcho Podcast Series 76: SPRKLBB

Less than one year after his 2019 release entitled ‘Trans Asia Express’, DVS NME returns with a collection of original tracks that were produced between 2018-2020. This 30-track album is a not-so-subtle nod to the Electro inspirations that have helped to influence the DVS NME sound that has developed over the course of the last 20 years. The most obvious influence is that of Detroit pioneers Drexciya and subsequent projects by Gerald Donald. The album pays homage to Dopplereffekt’s 1999 album ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ in both its title and cover art. The release ranges from brooding, downtempo machine funk all the way to dancefloor-oriented melodic Electro. The album relies heavily on the sounds of classic Electro machines like Mono/Poly, MS-20, SH-101, Jupiter-8, Juno-106, JX-3P, TB-303, Polysix, TR-606, OB-8, TR-808, ARP Odyssey, and TR-909. DVS NME is the man behind the weekly radio show/daily blog called 'Dark Science Electro' and has been a dedicated contributor for the Electro community for the last 10 years. He shares his love of Electro music by posting Electro-affiliated news, art, mixes, albums, memes, concerts, tracks, gear and more. The latest release from Turbo Recordings features the rarest of all techno label occurrences: a good story. An Austrian producer with releases on Kneaded Pains and Nervous, Dubesque met NYC legend Amanda Lepore at the Life Ball years ago, when he used to serve as the VIP area host. Her manager asked him to produce an EP to accompany her memoirs (Doll Parts), and he went on to also write songs for her “Bartschland Follies” show at the McKittrick Hotel. See? Real people with interesting lives. Not a single dude with a laptop providing his alternate score for Inception in sight. 

Years passed, and Dubesque was struck by an idea. Create a techno track featuring Lepore’s vocals. This led to a collaboration with Brooklyn indie A&R Peace Bisquit and electro pop singer/songwriter Ayer which gave birth to “Queen”, featuring the world’s most famous transsexual. 

Here’s where things get really f’n fascinating, because the result - “Queen” - won the hearts of all two Turbo Recordings employees, who decided to give the track the largest platform imaginable to them. Please request the Radio Mix when calling your local sports talk station to demand airplay, and play the instrumental version when loudly regaling your friends with the tale of its creation. The EP is rounded out by two more excellent examples of Dubesque’s stellar techno craft: the title track and “BRB,” which we’re told is how teenagers abbreviate “Ballroom Blitz” from the Wayne’s World soundtrack online. 

Please keep this saga close to your heart and pass it onto future generations, who will need the power of stories to keep them warm as they toil in the Amazon Webcam Mines in exchange for jeans and AA batteries. Become part of this rich oral tradition today!
