First to strut down this week’s Debut red carpet is Moscow-born, Tokyo-based Phil Gerus. Having already supplied the goods to George Fitzgerald’s ManMakeMusic, Jazzanova’s Sonar Kollektiv and Kerri Chandler’s Madtech Records — the beat whiz has undoubtedly got some solid backup.

Enter "Why All The Questions?", plucked from Phil's upcoming 12” Pleasures and Pains EP and continuing to stir his cauldron of cassette pop, house, soul, R&B and funk. The track harks as a bonafide eighties throwback — funky bass stabs, soulful vocals and that quintessential eighties synthesiser sound all combine to deliver some explosive DeLorean dynamite.

Pleasures and Pains is released through Lumberjacks Boogie on wax only.

Malcolm Mitchell’s Global Warming Records is a self-proclaimed outlet for “discoholics” and multi-cultural geeks. The three projects they’ve released are a collection of songs emanating a cosmic, often tribal, synth heavy analog disco sound. The latest release from Marseille based producer Fred Berthet (aka. DJ STEEF), an old time friend of the label and major artist of the downtempo scene in the South of France, fits a similar mold. The EP, similar to its artwork, is filled with a slow, sexual tension heightened by slow, driving rhythms and hypnotic acid bass lines.

Included in the EP is a remix from Italian balearic duo, Mushrooms Project (Giorgio Giri and Marco Lentano), who have crafted a superbly organic and deeply drugged out mid tempo burner that seems to call on numerous Ibiza sunrises for inspiration. Freaky, mesmerizing synth work take the listener on a trip to acid islands where steady bass permeates through thick fog over glistening percussive sequences. Its driving rhythms make the track feel faster than it is. This is a much appreciated form of trickery in down-tempo productions. Slow burners that make you dance hard are not easy to make.

The EP, and 100 limited edition copies of the naughty cover art illustrated by Ben Hubbard and printed on 420 x 594 mm poster, 250g heavy matte paper is available to purchase via GWR’s Bandcamp page. Having established a handful of renowned imprints such as Rekids, Pyramids Of Mars, Cabin Fever and The Double R, Matt Edwards’ new venture aims to shine a light on classic tracks that didn’t always get the recognition they deserve.

“Amoon [Sir Lord Comixx] and I go back a long way and we met through our friend Justin [Isonoe] in the early 90s,” says Matt Edwards. “I was still living in Catford and would regularly drive over to Justin’s studio where he'd play me all this crazy, otherworldly music from Amoon and it blew my mind - I was completely captivated by his unique take on techno.”

“At the time I had no idea that we grew up in the same neighbourhood and Amoon was living just around the corner so, of course, we hooked up and in 1996 I released an EP from him including one of his classics ‘UR My Omen’ on my Hard Up label.”

Composed of four tracks from separate releases, ‘Retroactive (Part One)’ inaugurates with ‘1 4 The Groove’ from Sir Lord Comixx’s ‘Danceteria EP’ on Ugly Music. Produced in ’96, the track’s raw aesthetic features sharp percussion, heady melodies and a compelling groove. Meanwhile, ‘Enemax’ – which appeared on 1A Records - demonstrates throbbing synths and shuffling drums.

Originally produced under his a.Moon moniker in ‘98, ‘Funk Box’ is the most robust track on the package with its thudding kicks and assortment of meandering sounds, before the ‘Azid Jazz’ provides a deep and funky finale.

For their 5th release Moment Cinetique welcome back highly regarded French/Swiss producer Sweet Fruity Brunch to the label for a joint EP with Mexican producer Selva.

Title track Jambon-Beurre sees Sweet Fruity Brunch and Selva join forces for some twisted, dusty, disco-house filled with clever edits, funk fingered bass lines and a huge strings & horns riff that really creates a high energy peak time track.

Sweet Fruity Brunch goes solo for Shelby Le Hibou (Shelby the Owl) and provides more disco-led deep house with vintage keys, wah guitars and vocal edits intricately coming together for another dancefloor ready number.

Up and coming Mexican producer Selva makes his solo label debut with Mezcal to finish off the EP. Jazz loops meet hip-hop vocal edits and skippy percussion for a deeper, groove-heavy & unique finish to the EP.

PREMIERE: Sweet Fruity Brunch - Shelby Le Hibou [Moment Cinetique]

So, I made this one a couple years ago but have always liked it and the computer that I made it on fried last week. A bunch of the plug-ins I used on it don't work on Ableton 10 so what are you gonna do. I just gave it a quick master back when I originally made it and I guess I never technically finished it but it is what it is. Also, Figgy sent me a few Rhodes parts that I used during the break after I wouldn't stop asking him.

Powering out across the open highways, House Of Disco stick it in 5th gear for their 23rd outing that see’s the return of the mighty Fouk. Four funked up, disco house jams that are drenched in undeniable grooves, ‘80s synth gold and tight percussive touches.
