The sky was a soft delicate shade of blue but that didn't stop it from falling upon them. Where had the rain come from? Why was it here on today of all days? As they walked upon the shore, looking out upon the splashes atop the ocean and the soft waves which rolled in against the sandy beach, they held one another's hands. Perhaps this would be the last time, for soon they would be long gone from here and all that would be left might be the remnants and puddles of a day lost in time. 

Mark E is a bit of a UK legend if you will, we don't say that lightly. For over fifteen years he has been producing music which has delighted and intrigued dancefloors the world over, he is infamous for weaving samples throughout his work like a rich tapestry and his music is reminiscent of the golden era of house, funk and disco in which the dancer was king. Prayer For Peace is the latest LP from Melbroune-hailing nu-jazz maestro Ziggy Zeitgeist and his band, Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange. This is Ziggy’s first full-length project with his current lineup based in Berlin since having moved there in the summer of 2019, and the first to be released on newly-founded label, Get Together Collective. Recorded over a 3-day period in the revered Jazzanova studios in Berlin, and with engineering and mixing handled by master producer Axel Reinemer, this album serves up an ecstatic 8-track showcase of the band’s freewheeling, live-jam oriented approach to jazz-fusion-inspired groove-making.  

	Clocking in at track six on the album, “Tightrope” balances many of the various elements that make Ziggy and co.’s music so electrifying. The opening half of the track, which features a mix of steady percussion, warbly bass, funky keys, congas and bongos, feels in line with much of the tradition of jazz-fusion pioneers of the past. But what easily could have become mere pastiche soon escalates into something entirely unique and entrancing. The beat steadily grows more erratic and unfettered once it passes the halfway point, with the tempo and build-up hinting at a techno-like drop. The band never quite lets the track devolve into a state of pure sonic catharsis, however, as they wrangle it back into the jazz-fusion rhythm they so expertly established in the opening half, while still allowing it to develop and evolve in organic ways until petering out at the end.

Ziggy and his cohort liberally take elements from various genres and styles to pay homage to them, while effortlessly staging jaw-dropping feats of experimentation and improvisation. A tough balancing act, indeed, but one that they pull off with panache.

Under his new alias, Nowt, Chris Watson, best known as one-half of South London dance duo FYI Chris, will be dropping his solo debut EP, High Street EP. The EP will be released on fellow Londoner Will Hofbauer’s Third Place Records label on June 10th. This release marks Chris’ first solo material outside of his work with his FYI Chris right-hand man, Chris Coupe. The duo has built a name for themselves among London dance circles through the independent venue, vinyl store, and community space they opened in South London, Rye Wax, as well as releases on various esteemed labels, including Rhythm Section, Banoffee Pies, Eclipse Tribes, and their own label, West Friends. 

On High Street EP, Nowt delivers a playful, highly charged, dreamy set of four house cuts. A-side closer, “Owt”, brings the party to a full swing. From its very opening tribal drum loop, accompanied by what sound like warped bird calls, the latter of which are maintained throughout the track’s runtime, it’s clear that Nowt has a keen ear for blending off-kilter sounds and samples into a wholly distinct and unexpected whole. The track somehow never manages to slip into complete chaos, even despite its tonal shifts occurring at near breakneck speed. There’s a gracefulness that underlines the track’s looseness and playfulness, making this an incredibly impressive and rewarding left-field house banger.
