As customary, the final haiku of the year is by Kobayashi Issa. I just discovered New Year’s Day was the first day of spring in the old Japanese calendar, and it generally fell on February.

Among the four great masters of Japanese haiku, Issa was the most prolific: during his lifetime he wrote over 20,000 haiku, hundreds of tanka, and several haibun. If you want to find out more about this prolific author I suggest you check out this database of his haiku.

New Year Quartet (naviarhaiku417)

A track for Naviar Records Haiku challenge; seven days in which to create a track in response to the haiku posted. As the Haiku is about New year's day I thought it appropriate to write it on this day. For this piece I decided to do something different to my past Haiku challenges, with no brass or strings in this piece. A Piano and synth piece mainly based around Olafur Arnald's Stratus software. I decided to use a slightly dissonant key, reflecting the uncertainty of the world at the moment, whilst at the same time trying to give a more hopeful feel.

You stare back, a moment in time, just a moment of hesitation. Was that all, you think.
You turn around and continue your way. Ten miles you may go, just straight, just walking. Walk your thoughts away…
But you can’t they are faster as you could walk.
Years, boy, years, and of them a lot - passed by. 
Years you shared ideas and dreams, that is what you assumed.
But walk on, don’t look back!
There is no one watching out for you
Hoping, that you may come back.
Walk on boy,

And suddenly you know it 
You felt this before
One hundred years back in your childhood,
You walked away
Hoping someone will call you back,
Your mother, your father,
But even them…
They did not
They did not!
How you wished, they would have done it
That there would have been love,
But there was not

And now, 40 years of hopeless future later,
You walk away,
And no one calls you to turn back…

Through the window pane, morning starts to break. Towards the horizon, the pale blueness of a clear sky appears through wide breaks of the clouds. The fading light of the brightest stars brings the hope of a bright dawn, of a new day, of the sun.

I love listening to & creating ambient, dark ambient, avant-garde & experimental electronica (and the occasional beatscape). I have no professional aspirations  - I just really like creating music / manipulating sounds. It's my way of relaxing after a hard day at the office. All my tracks are produced using monitoring headphones (Audix A140) so I recommend that you listen to my music through headphones. My DAW of choice is FL Studio. I also use Reason every now & then. 


To the artists I follow; I do my best to try to listen to as many of your tracks as possible each night (I listen to each track all the way through - you went through the effort to create a track so you deserve to have it heard in full). If I miss a recent upload of yours, please forgive me...
