Ketamine may be more widely known as the party drug “Special K.” But researchers are beginning to explore its potential to treat severe forms of mental illnesses like OCD and bipolar disorder. Stanford psychiatrist Carolyn Rodriguez, MD, PhD, is one of those researchers intrigued by the unconventional therapy. In this podcast, she’ll discuss how she got interested in the use of ketamine and how she is determined to find out why, in studies, the drug has provided relief from symptoms.

Carolyn Rodriguez: Ketamine and OCD (2017)

Renée Fleming is one of the most acclaimed singers in the world. The renowned soprano was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor for an artist, in 2013, by President Obama. In 2016, she was named an artistic adviser for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. There, she participates in a variety of projects, including Sound Health: Music and the Mind, a collaboration between the Kennedy Center, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Endowment for the Arts, to study the intersection of neuroscience and music.

In this podcast, she'll discuss the initiative, her singing while undergoing an fMRI as a research project, and how she hopes she can help broaden the understanding of music as healer.

As David Gorn reports, Humanwide used genetic screening, digital health devices, wellness coaching, and other strategies to craft a promising approach for personalized preventive care.

Humanwide: What is Precision Health? (2019)

Imagine the ideal primary care clinic. Patients don’t have long waits for appointments. Doctors aren’t overloaded with paperwork. Specialists step into an exam room for an instant consultation. Most importantly, the whole care experience is personalized, with a focus on preventing disease and making people healthier — the vision of Precision Health. This vision came to life in the Humanwide pilot project at the Stanford Medicine Primary Care 2.0 clinic in Santa Clara, California.

As reporter David Gorn discovered, such holistic thinking goes a long way toward turning a rushed and confusing doctor visit into a clear, friendly and effective one.

Humanwide: The New Face of Primary Care (2019)

Your genes reveal whether you’re predisposed to heart disease or certain cancers. Your genes also can tell you which prescription drugs will work best for you, which may cause side effects, and which are unlikely to work at all. In Stanford Medicine’s Humanwide pilot project, DNA testing helped doctors tailor care plans and medications to each patient.

As David Gorn reports, integrating these screenings into primary care is an important step toward realizing the promise of Precision Health: predicting, preventing and treating disease based on the individual patient.

Humanwide: How DNA Testing Can Personalize Patient Care (2019)

Body weight. Blood pressure. Glucose level. In Stanford Medicine’s Humanwide pilot project, each patient was given a mobile or at-home digital device to track these key health metrics. Data flowed automatically to their doctors, who used the readings to inform health coaching sessions and individualized care plans. The pilot brought the vision of Precision Health to the primary care setting, offering doctors and patients the tools to predict and prevent the onset of disease. 

As David Gorn reports, engaging patients and inspiring them to take charge of their health were  central goals of Humanwide.

Humanwide: Engaging Patients In Everyday Health (2019)

Physician burnout is a major concern in primary care. Doctors who want to make a difference in their patients’ lives find themselves spending hours documenting care on computers and only minutes engaging on a personal level. The Humanwide pilot project redesigned the way primary care is practiced, with an eye toward helping doctors and their medical teams to partner more closely with patients in more satisfying relationships.

Embodying Stanford Medicine’s vision of Precision Health, Humanwide created a data-driven, team-based model that provided a better work environment for doctors and medical staff members. As David Gorn reports, it also increased patients’ satisfaction.

Dale Beatty, DNP, RN, is the chief nursing officer and vice president of patient care services at Stanford Health Care. Experienced in working in both community and academic medical center environments, Beatty helps lead initiatives that focus on delivering exceptional, value-based care and improving the wellness of patients, as well as supporting care providers.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 800,000 people die by suicide in the world each year, which equates to roughly one death every 40 seconds. And although there is not a single cause that can be attributed to suicide, Stanford Medicine’s Rebecca Bernert, PhD, says it is preventable and effective interventions do exist. 

In this podcast, Dr. Bernert, an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and founding Director of the Suicide Prevention Research Laboratory at Stanford. talks about those interventions, and the tremendous need to raise awareness about mental health and suicide to reduce stigma and enhance access to care.

Suicide and hope: A conversation with Stanford psychologist Rebecca Bernert (2019)

Three years ago, internationally renowned flutist and broadcast journalist Eugenia Zukerman was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. In a new memoir, “Like Falling Through a Cloud” she chronicles her journey through a collection of poems.

In this podcast, she discusses how family and music have kept her grounded and how she hopes the book may offer comfort to the millions of people who are coping with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Since the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, school shootings have become more common. More than 220,000 American students have experienced a school shooting, which has prompted researchers like Maya Rossin-Slater to wonder about the mental toll these violent events have on the young survivors.  In this podcast, she discusses a study that found an increase in antidepressant use among youths in the local communities where fatal school shootings occurred.

Stanford psychologist and addiction specialist Keith Humphreys, PhD, and two collaborators conducted an extensive review of Alcoholics Anonymous studies and found that the fellowship helps more people achieve sobriety than therapy does. Humphreys discusses the findings in this pocast.

It’s been five years since Stanford neurosurgeon Paul Kalanithi’s death. Lucy Kalanithi and daughter Cady, now 5, have moved to a new home. Kalanithi fell in love again. But they still visit Paul’s grave, nestled at the edge of a field in the Santa Cruz Mountains. 

“Paul’s decision to look death in the eye was a testament to not just who he was in the final hours of his life but who he had always been,” she wrote in the epilogue. “For much of his life, Paul wondered about death — and whether he could face it with integrity. In the end, the answer was yes. I was his wife and a witness.”

Kalanithi continues to speak publicly about their family’s legacy, including a recent conversation with contributing editor Paul Costello at the San Mateo Public Library. They spoke about some of her memories of life after her husband’s diagnosis and what it means to move on after the death of a loved one.

Five years later: A conversation with Lucy Kalanithi (2020)

The COVID-19 epidemic has brought a lot of uncertainty to many families. In this podcast, Victor Carrion, MD, director of the Stanford Early Life Stress and Pediatric Anxiety Program, discusses how to talk with children and teens about the anxiety they are likely to experience due to COVID-19, social distancing, and shelter-in-place orders.

Victor Carrion: How to talk to kids and teens about COVID-19 (2020)

A new treatment is offering relief for patients who suffer from severe depression. In a small study, which used high doses of magnetic stimulation, Stanford researchers saw a rapid relief of symptoms in 90% of participants.
