Infinite compassion: Mahakaruna. Avalokitesvara, or Guanyin, makes this his (her) defining aspect through the vow to release all beings from suffering. While making this song, I was struck profoundly by the scope of this vow: this is not just a vow to protect people whose suffering comes from the "outside," people living without homes, or food, victims of the cruelty of others... This is a vow even to release those individuals who practice cruelty from their own cruelty. The landlord who evicts, the capitalist who starves, the abuser, the war general, these people are deeply mired in the illusions of our world (power, money, stability) and the path to universal freedom includes their transformation too. This undertaking of Avalokitesvara may be the most noble goal; to look into the abyss of hell and decide against personal nirvana to achieve collective nirvana. What do cats have to do with this? Everything! I saw a man in Gaza who was running through streets of destroyed buildings and smoking rubble, banging two cat food tins together. surrounding him were at least 20 cats, and more were coming out of the remains of buildings. He was constantly greeting them, smiling at them, and petting them, as if he had one thousand arms. Avalokitesvara-in-his-body. He was using the small allocation of food he was given, not to feed himself, but to feed them. When we are living lives much more comfortable than his, how are we realizing Mahakaruna? Is our compassion really boundless? Or do we limit our compassion to those whose struggles we relate to? I hope this 18:18:018 allows you to reflect, change what you need to, and continue the good fight.
