We are a songwriting and music production duo with a strong inclination toward gentle sounds and kind words.  We like to weave meaningful songs spun with love and care from stories and real life.
The Powdered Earth are Gloucester, UK based writer/producer duo George Moorey and Shane Young.

George's past work focuses on collaborations and community music projects. His portfolio includes several albums, national lottery funded projects, library music, recordings of local artists and music production for an online recording service. In 2018 he created the SPACES project with funding from Arts Council England.

As a drummer, Shane has made records with Ray Shulman, Nick Lowe, Stephen Street and Ian Broudie, as well as playing on albums by The Christians and Mansun and touring with the likes of Jools Holland, Squeeze and Del Amitri. Having toured the UK, France and the US, these days he’s staying relatively still, teaching drums and photography, and writing his third novel. Most recently this collaboration with George Moorey on The Powdered Earth project has allowed him to step out of his comfort zone, debuting as a singer and lyricist.

Musical musings from whales with wheels.

Formed in a mist to the south and west of Manchester. Fermented in oak barrels in Cheshire. Stored for a long time and brought out only when the need is great and the time is right.

That time is now.

A circa 2018 coming together of old college and post-uni friends who like playing Americana kinda stuff, balancing influences from lo-fi Grandaddy, Pavement et al to alt-country and folk.

The songs usually hang on a story and a good old earworm melody, with lyrics that playfully tell a tale of characters, journeys, or situations. New single "Programmed to go on" out now, following the recently released "Men of the weather station / Superhero EP".

Kobana – not many artists can be quickly recognized after just a few musical notes.

Kobana is definitely one of them thanks to his unique production style. His signature is enclosed in amazing percussion and synth lines, which work together creating synergistic effect. As one of the journalists has put it: “they pop up together so well…”.
 
Kobana’s music journey started around millennium change when he got introduced to basic capabilities of computer recording software and flexibility which only computer workstation can offer.  Since then, he has spent countless hours in his home studio learning production techniques, tweaking and bending the sound, reverse engineering someone else’s music productions, finding out the best use of mastering science and plugins.

The result of his dedication is quickly recognizable in his productions: all sounds create a fantastic harmony that engages the listener and ideally transfers Kobana’s emotions. His skills were quickly recognized and fructified (and still do) in number of collaborations (some of them became an ongoing projects: with Mario Hatchet and Yane3dots, some others were just one off). 

Nowadays Kobana is regarded as one of most talented producers in the progressive house world. 
Top DJs and labels in the industry appreciated his music, his dj sets appeared in the most respectable radio shows.  However, as Kobana used to say: this is only just the beginning. His motto: to deliver quality over quantity remains true.
