"I'm like a collector—everything I come across makes it into my music." The dance music don talks about the music that shaped him and his recent L.B. Dub Corp album on Dekmantel.

Luke Slater, the British DJ, producer and occasional drummer, has been making music under a slew of monikers since the '80s: Planetary Assault Systems, L.B. Dub Corp, LSD, The 7th Plain, Clementine—the list goes on. While he's put out an excellent range of dynamic analogue music that runs the gamut of house, acid, breakbeat, electro and even spoken word, he's probably best known for his productions and live shows that focus on sleek and solid techno, as showcased on Ostgut Ton and his own imprint, Mote-Evolver.

In the latest instalment of our flagship live series Playing Favourites, Slater unpacks the tracks that, for him, best illustrate the history of techno at large, as well as the records that define his creative process and career trajectory. He speaks with Chloe Lula live from Polifonic festival about his love of Detroit and Underground Resistance, as well as the abiding influence of hip-hop on his early work and his love of intentionally integrating mistakes in his music. He also reflects on how he became the first non-German artist to release on Berghain's esteemed record label, as well as discussing his most recent release, Saturn to Home, for Dekmantel. The double LP saw him return to his drumming practice and introduce surprising and powerful collaborations from electronic music contemporaries and vocalists like Kittin and the poet Benjamin Zephaniah. The rubber hits the road for a studio mix like no other and British selector IMOGEN’s in the driving seat. Her roots in Southampton and later London are the funnel through which her urban-inflected frequencies travel, an articulation of years spent listening to The Prodigy, Ellen Allien and Umwelt, dark-electro with allusions to UK bass. At a mere 16 years old, she moved to the Big Smoke to study Music Tech, became a regular on Radar Radio and was playing in the booth at Berghain a short two years later, with a Fabric residency quickly in tow. 2022 saw her debut EP out on Voitax, an enthusiastically received five track gem that wore her love of breaks and monolith techno confidently. She’s now both Tresor and NTS Radio resident and founder of Wigs, an online hub through which she helps peers connect turned event series and music label. There’s too much to cover before catching your breath really, but it’s openness to experience and energy, not age, that pay the highest dividends. Thoroughly steeped in these internet times, IMOGEN has found a voice that breaks through the wall of endless and indistinguishable sounds and delivers on a pledge to get crowds moving. Bassiani Podcast does that, rattling beats that shapeshift to the breaks weighted sounds synonymous with a UK upbringing, this is a call back to corporeal experience. A 90-minute direct line to the essence of techno from one of the UK’s most promising names.

Born in Georgia and based in Berlin, Irakli is a key figure in the international techno scene. As the co-founder of the production duo I/Y and the STAUB label with its own party series at ://about blank, he has shaped Berlin’s underground culture like few others. His intense sets, which take him to clubs like Tresor and Berghain as well as stages around the globe, reflect his deep passion for electronic music.

With his project Intergalactic Research Institute for Sound and his acclaimed debut album Major Signals on Dial Records, Irakli demonstrates his flair for emotional depth and sonic experimentation. In an interview with Andre Kronert, Irakli highlights the importance of passion and enjoyment in music production. He discusses the challenges of the production process and emphasizes the value of reliability and strong collaboration. For Irakli, one thing is clear: good music has no expiration date.

Offering us a Trippy, Deep and Driving journey, this recording is bringing us back to the powerful 4 hours closing set she played for us at Ministerium in Lisbon last July.

Denise Rabe´s experience in the Berlin techno scene as a booker, radio host, promoter and dj since she relocated to German capital drawn by the possibility of a life in music, is reflected in the pragmatic, grounded artist she became and the unique, original voice she's developed as a producer.

Her approach and work ethic can be seen expressed on every release she's done under her label, Rabe, where her music is matched with an equal amount of care, thought and work, in the vessels that contain it, within a coherent aesthetic and vision that informs music, artwork and presentation equally.

Imprints such as Mutewax, who released her first 12" in 2015, ARTS where she quickly became one of the label´s staples and Stroboscopic Artifacts where she published "Manifesto" in 2019, are clear reference points that describe her career and its development.

Rabe’s particular inclination to sparse industrial soundscapes, gothic aesthetics, driven grooves under hooks that hypnotize as much as they distinguish, have propelled her 10 year career across stages all over the US, Asia and Europe, as well as the clubs that represent the apex of techno world wide such as Berghain and Tresor.
