"This mix is a continuation of a set I played at the Berlin Philharmonic in February. The tracklist is somewhat different, but the idea very similar: I was looking to integrate some scattered individual incidents across two decades of electronic music into multidimensional dialogues with some precursors and oddly fitting acoustic works since the 1970s. So this is how you get a Speedy J track from 2000 into two musical exchanges at once – with Tony Williams Lifetime and Nana Vasconcelos on one side, and the rhythms of Ena and DB1 on the other. Or Barry Altschul with Jeff Mills, and Source Direct with Michael Ranta."

Stefan’s mix took the occasion to test new ways of moving from one track into the next. In conventional DJ practice, fading and EQing shape the crossover section between tracks. Instead of EQs, Stefan employed low & high cut filters (so far, so common), but also – and that’s the new thing here – a toolbox manipulating the stereo field of the recordings.

This is probably the first recorded DJ mix to ever utilise an M/S-matrix dynamically. In M/S-coding, a stereo signal is divided into "mid" and "side" channels instead of left & right. Mid is essentially the mono-compatible information of the mix, and side is its opposite: anything not mono. This way, the diffuse elements of a track can be controlled separately from the sharply defined "mid" elements. 

In this mix, each new track creeps up from the diffuse sides and then moves towards the center of attention, while the previous track is pushed to the edges by reducing its "mid" content. It appears to be one of the smoothest and most naturally sounding ways to move forward in a mix – surprisingly, in all the recent high end custom DJ mixer fads this simple yet brilliant technology has never been considered. M/S-blending neither sounds radical nor abrupt, which is the whole point. This extraordinarily smooth transition method allows for effortless blending between pronouncedly different material, such as Elektro Guzzi’s acoustic techno finesse and Vladimir Dubyshkin’s decidedly synthetic bangers. Everything "sits" better in the mix.

Formally, the mix is surprisingly straight-to-the-point for a producer with such an experimental bent as Stefan. Nearly all included tracks are straight up dance material, and within the first four tracks he is already decidedly in techno territory. It is due to the extraordinary degree of variance as explored by the label’s artists such as Elektro Guzzi, KiNK, L’estasi Dell’oro or rRoxymore that the 4/4 thrust of this mix radiates so much diversity, which is why the embrace of a unified tempo works well to fold these fierce individualists into the temporary entity of a mix.

'Veiki' is a foray onto new rhythmic ground for machine-based dance music. While its sounds appear firmly grounded in contemporary techno, its pulse is neither based on the 4/4 tradition nor on the breakbeat continuum. The metres employed here are distinctly asymmetric – i.e. they never add up to binary entities. With patterns of 7, 9 or 11, they offer possibilities for dislocating the centre of gravity in ways not available to binary rhythmic fare. Thus this may represent one of the few systematic efforts to move slamming machine techno onto an alternative rhythmic foundation: Real broken beat.
