Tio Miguel & Tia Lalaia

Every CapeVerdean family has a tio "uncle" Miguel, and a tia "aunt" Lalaia. Miguel was the firstborn out of 12 children, and one of the first people to leave the village of Lagoa, on the island of Santo Antao. And later on he left his country CapeVerde in the early sixties. He had saved money secretly by being a grog trafficker,contrabande, where he and his companions would smuggle grog between islands in the night, on a little boat! He would also make extra goat cheese to sell. He did not tell his parents he was saving money to leave the island for a better future. When he finally had made enough, and had the courage to tell them, they were not happy, but he continued on his pursuit of happiness. 
He arrived in Europe, could not speak the language, had to adapt to the cold weather, was alone, and still managed to make enough money to send to his family so they could make the same journey. He brought all of his brothers and sisters to Europe, including my mom. He was a political activist, and the first one to tell us about the CapeVerdean struggle, and our freedom fighter Amilcar Cabral. And he even somehow managed to get his hands on walkie-talkies that were later used in the armed struggle for the independence of CapeVerde. I remember asking him "TioMiguel, where did you get the walkietalkies from?" He would silently look the other way, and act as if i did not asked the question. He was that guy who would step into the room and who would claim his respect by his presence alone. The picture says enough, right? A gentleman, a serious man, a man"s man, a leader, a humble soul but not scared to speak out. I remember visiting him a couple of years ago, and he would have a look at me from my head to my toes, and then say " You know i like everything about you, but that thing you got in your nose (my nosering) got to go." I could just sit with him, look at him, and feel blessed that i had the honor to know such a soul. It was like every wrinkle told a story, every look created new dimensions.
It is only right that i name my 1st CABOVERDEVINYL tape after him. TioMiguel, thank you for ,your courage, your love, and taking the first steps. Com muito TuffLove, sobrinho Adison Fernando
