'Composing for piano today is, from my point of view, one of the most demanding challenges: the composer needs to deal with an instrument which is heavily charged of history that even the single pressure of a key opens a thousand of musical echoes and references, more or less far in time, which roar in the ears.
And that is still valid if one chooses alternatively to work ‘off the keyboard’ and to concentrate on the other components of it; in the same way, or even more one could say, the saturation is immediate and cumbersome.
Deeply plunged in this scenario and looking to find my ‘own’ piano, I chose to put in connection all those different aspects, accepting the historical load, especially for what concerns the performing technique more that the linguistic one, to try to develop and create an ‘extended’ tool able to shatter its own limits and known sound world.
The work, which is part of the cycle SOLO for solo instruments, is based on three different layers: the acoustic piano which is handled in a ‘traditional’ way with all its overwhelming past; the synthetic piano which is an invented instrument built on a varied and complex sound library (a sampled piano tuned on the spectrum of its first A, prepared sound, noises of the case and tailpiece, etc…), which represent the extension of the timbre of the acoustic one and also acts on the sound material and its syntax.
The third element is the electronics in its purest conception (granular synthesis, stretching and various editing) that has the task to stress the structural nodes and articulate the form of each section of the piece glueing together the other two layers.
Another important ingredient is the spectral dimension introduced by the synthetic piano which is often in dialogue with the acoustic one adding the microtonal factor to the sound texture.
The title refers, from one side, to a past form far in time where two or more constituents develop and build an abstract musical organism through their constant relationship without any specific extramusical reference, while, on the other side, defines the nature and the speculative horizon of the composition.'

Invenzioni (Solo V) for acoustic piano and its synthetic double (2022)

A "Il pianista" scopriamo la musica per pianoforte di Alexander Zemlinsky, grazie a un bel disco di Emanuele Torquati. A cavallo fra due mondi, quello di Mahler e Richard Strauss da un lato, e quello di Schoenberg e della Seconda Scuola di Vienna dall'altro, Zemlinsky ha scritto musica notevole, ma ha avuto la sfortuna di rimanere a lungo confinato in una sorta di limbo, forse a causa di uno stile difficile da classificare. Oggi ne ascoltiamo alcuni lavori, dalle Ländliche Tänze a Ein Lichtstrahl, passando per le Balladen (in parte ispirate a quelle di Brahms, che fu fra i primi sostenitori di Z.) e le Fantasien über Gedichte von Richard Dehmel; lo stesso Torquati colloquierà con Luca Ciammarughi per approfondire genesi e caratteristiche di questi lavori.

Pierini: Canzoni al sol (2016)

Born in 1971, he studied composition with Fabio Nieder after being graduated in the Conservatory of Turin under Gilberto Bosco. He attended also composition workshops with Toshio Hosokawa and Luis De Pablo.   
Several ensembles and soloists as BIT20 Ensemble, Atlas Ensemble, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai, Wu Wei, Michele Marelli, Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, Ernest Rombout, Ensemble Orchestral Contemporaine, Delian Quartett, ensemble L'arsenale among others played and play his compositions.
His music was performed in italian and international festivals such as MITO Settembre Musica, Impuls Graz, Musikfest Stuttgart, Gare du nord Basel, Rai Nuova Musica, Moscow Forum Festival, Milano Musica, Konzerthaus Berlin,  Musica Nova Helsinki, Muziekgebouw aan't ij  among the others.
Some of his compositions were broadcasted by the Italian National Radio RadioRAI3, the Slovenian Radio Television, Radio 4 Holland and Radio Yle 1 Finland.
He worked with the Centre for the Electronic Music Research AGON Arsmagnetica of Milan with which he realized several multimedia projects. 
He taught composition in the ‘Scuola Civica’ of Turin and collaborates with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai.
