Tribute To Ultimae Records by Monochrome (28.06.22)

DJ Chris Case was a regular at many Tokyo chill-out rooms in the 1990s, including the legendary Odyssey parties at Club Token. One of the older faces on the scene, he represented a connection between the psychedelic 90s and the psychedelic 60s, and he offered a lot of arcane knowledge when it came to music theory. 
Chris passed away last year, and I’m uploading this mix in his memory.. I don’t keep a lot of DJ mixes, but I’ve had this CDR for 30 years now, and remarkably it still played. I’m not sure exactly when Chris mixed this, but I would guess late 1995. Most of the music is from Silent Records, which was one of the premier ambient labels based in San Francisco in the 90s. We all dreamt or wished to explore imaginary & far away grounds, between no man’s lands and intangible panoramas. Border 50 is a hymn to this laid-off concept, when frontiers and delineations dissipate to a wilder breadth, where, as Baudelaire would say, "Everything is beauty, luxury, calm and intense pleasure ».

Swiss-born artist Moreno Antognini aka Master Margherita treats us to a mystical and meditative album driven by low-end quiet pulses, swaddling guitar basslines, dense granular pads, giving a powerful homage to a certain definition of Doom Jazz, Stoner Rock and Nordic Ambient with influences from Pink Floyd, Miles Davis, Bill Laswell or Biosphere’s works.

Carefully crafted over the course of two years, this « Border 50 » album stands apart, a return to the source for the artist, hallmark of Master Margherita’s irrefutable multi-instrumentist and storyteller talent.

Born in Athens and self-educated in guitar, piano, percussion and music technology, Stefanos has been involved in various forms of electronic and natural sound from the age of 7.

To date, he has released a total of 14 studio albums, 10 extended plays, and 11 singles.

As a composer and sound designer, he has composed music for various visual presentations, including projection mapping, holograms, and virtual reality experiences. His work has been commissioned by big names like National Geographic, Nike, Red Bull, Heineken, Microsoft, Samsung, and many more.

Additionally, as a stage musician and sound designer, he has participated in theatrical productions of the National Theatre of Greece and other productions, touring in ancient Greek theaters and internationally.

Several of his tracks have been released in music compilations and used for film/short film productions worldwide.

Also Co-founder and composer of the Zen Garden and Dreamakers multi performance projects.

Finally, as a sound designer, he conducted research and created sounds and presets for VST instruments for major corporations.
