This reminds me in part of the brilliant soundtrack for Wings of Desire by Wim Wenders.

This piece comprises two of the seven movements of RECORDARI.

oiseaux métamorphique (2017)

Composed in response to a commission by my fellow composer, Veronika Krausas (2008), this is an 'extreme arrangement' of John William's Raiders March (From Raiders of the Lost Ark) for automatic Player Piano. 

The piece was first written on paper, then transferred to a MIDI file, then sent to a 'piano roll perforator' who made the piano roll for player piano. The particular player piano recorded here was unable to perform dynamics or pedal markings: "Note on/off only".

'The winged sun loses its feathers on the horizon.'

Based on a line from Egyptian-French surrealist poet Joyce Mansour’s ‘Blue like a Desert’, feathering light creates an image of a golden sun - a warm but imposing presence - slowly withering as it sets below the horizon. Each of the ten notes used represents a feather, getting caught and swept up in the wind of the music, until the piece culminates into a warm concoction of pitchless sounds, fading slowly into darkness. This coalescence of sound-colour creates - in the form of sound - the image that this poem’s line depicts.
