Nougayork is quite an unusual song in french Pop history. While many famous (and not so famous) French acts had a try at the "in sound" of their times, few strayed too far from what their audience knew them for. Claude Nougaro, a crooner with a highly respected jazz background, went to New York in the 80s and captured the sound that was then beating the heart of the city. Mixing his trademark French chanson rhymes, with bonafide electronic Freestyle sounds, he created something totally unique, and of his own. Nougayork went surprisingly massive, and became his biggest success in France.

In France the original version of this track was a huuuuuuge success during the 80's in Night Clubs and Radio shows as well, originally recorded by Patrick Coutin in 1981 at the Château d'Hérouville studio... Patrick Coutin is explaining that "he likes to watch girls walking on the beach..." (translation for "j'aime regarder les filles qui marchent sur la plage...") The track is still played nowadays in parties...
I have taken the decision to do a Dub version of it, in adding lots of effects, overdubs, Keyboards, and a Drum track that could stay true to the hypnotic beat with my personal vision of it....

It is with deep suffering that I learned about the death of France Gall today.
With her much of my musical culture goes, I think of Cristal of Starmania, but also all her personal albums.
She was a great lady of the French song, and an wonderfull artist.
I couldn't spend this day without tribute to her, as well as her husband Michel Berger, my favorite French composer.

Bashung - Volutes (V4YS Smoked Acoustic Rework)

Revisiting this late sixties classic originally written by Serge Gainsbourg for Françoise Hardy, who recorded it first, before he released a second version by himself. 
I chose a somehow dub-flavored atmosphere, as a little hint at some of his later work, where Jamaican rhythms influence was occasionally present.
