Scant presents Vitiate for Psychic Liberation. After nearly two decades of singular output in solo, collaborative, and curatorial capacities throughout the United States Scant arrives with his most pointed recorded material to date. As a stalwart of the 2000’s noise culture architecture along the eastern United States, Scant’s artistry has pressurized listening environments from gutters to theaters. As Scant, Matthew Boettke has stretched temporal capacities and initiated enveloping sonic experiences where volume is a physical meditative body. With Vitiate, through three recorded passages Scant trades the caustic frontal walls of aural stasis of his previous output for masterfully surgical digital synthesis of an utmost minimalist caliber. Of the process around cultivation of the recording, Boettke notes:

“VITIATE was recorded throughout the final days inside Apartment 202*. A reflection on cherished moments that soured, this is an attempt to immortalize and eradicate a core identity. Comfort betrays exclusively, familiarity breeds only weakness. What we are compelled to reach towards forever pushes back.”

Where so much of the contemporary discussion around Ambient music takes on an ecclesiastical bend, or a modal vocabulary that turns towards the hopeful, Vitiate operates in the dirge and dramatics of the deflated. Vitiate wraps you inside of it’s subtle modulations and tonal turns, but inside that reverberant embrace one sits dissociative and hollowed. This is not an album for the positive moment of Reverie, but for a reflection on inevitable stasis.

Scant is the alias of experimental musician Matt Boettke based out of New York City. He is a founding member of Thousands of Dead Gods, a record label in Brooklyn which previously operated a cassette focused record store from 2017-2022. Through his work as Scant he has produced over 30 limited edition tapes and CDs for American underground labels such as Chondritic Sound and Monorail Trespassing, while self-releasing through the Dead Gods imprint. Apart from solo recordings he has contributed to extensive collaborations with Justin Lakes (Shredded Nerve/Dead Gods), Stefan Aune (New Forces), Rodger Stella, and Nick Klein amongst others. As a curator, Boettke has been instrumental to the organization of several DIY experimental music festivals including Avant Fairfax and RVA Noise Fest in Virginia, and Summer Scum in New York.

With touches of melancholy and quiet monumentality, we enter deeply into introspection with a more reflective pace.

Describing a set that’s both chaotic and perfectly constructed is no simple feat, so we’ll leave it up to you to interpret. 

For us, it’s like stepping into a black hole full of color, a space where time and space shift into something intangible, something you can only feel. Let the experience speak for itself.

A two-hour free-fall clawing into the burrow, swinging abruptly between mourning, mania, self-flagellation, rage, despair and stillness. Digging down and inwards to a center that cannot hold, towards the point where a body overflows and radiates, becoming uncontainable. 
ionoss is an aspiring visual, material and sonic manipulator on the beginning of an errant path that will hopefully end in a mesh of cables, synthetic skin and autotune delirium. She is moved by jagged rhythms, low-end bass, processed voices and the sound of blips, bells and droplets.

The first katharsis release of 2025 is the album "Modular" by danish artist and composer Simon Littauer, known for his live performance on modular synthesizers with a very melodic and almost scientific approach to music. The album is a culmination of Littauer’s over 9 year-long journey with eurorack modular synthesizers. All the tracks on the album are recorded as one-takes, with no multi-track recordings or editing. Having spent infinitely many hours trying to master the instrument (even taking lessons in hardware design, coding, and electronic engineering to develop custom modules for his setup), Simon Littauer has played over a hundred live concerts on the system, including performances at Roskilde Festival (DK), By:Larm Festival (NO) and Spot Festival (DK).

On ‘Modular’, Littauer explores euphoric breakbeats on club-ready tracks like ‘Phicet’, ‘Swamp’ and ‘Xenon’, which might remind the listener of the universe of artists like Skee Mask, Richard Devine and Lanark Artefax, while calm and soothing atmospheres are introduced on ambient cuts like ‘Melo’. On ‘Jona’ Littauer is joined by J. Ludvig III - the drummer of Erika de Casier, for an ambient trance journey with live drum breakbeats. Overall, the album is a playful and experimental album that travels through many different genres, but with a consistent melancholic tone, that maintains the listener all the way through the 12 tracks.

Littauer explains, ‘‘My vision was to build a portable modular system on which I could perform, and improvise, while being able to recall sequences, samples, and settings reliably during live concerts, without having to re-patch between tracks. I feel like I can confidently say, that I succeeded with that. The sound and structures of the album are formed by how I configured my modular synthesizer, what made sense in a live performance context as well as other artists I heard during the process of making it. The complexity, impressive sound design, and machine-fluency of Richard Devine, whom I was fortunate enough to have as a teacher in the lead-up to the making of the album. And having followed the eurorack scene for many years - artists like Colin Benders and Catharina Barbieri have influenced my work as well’.

Littauer’s modular system is a 208 hp eurorack setup developed throughout 7 years. It is based around a Vector sequencer by Five12, the ER-301, configured as a live-effects engine and mixing console, two Hector modules from Poly, and two Bitboxes - one containing modulation signals and the other one containing oscillators and drums. One reverb module and a single module for macros and transitions developed by Littauer himself. The entire album is recorded on the ER-301 itself, during live performance.
